This succinct and elegant analysis is a wolf in sheep’s clothing: a profound and wide-ranging explanation of much that is wrong in society today, disguised as an essay on a narrow and specialist form of ‘talking therapy’: CBT [Cognitive Behavioural Therapy].

Dalal manages to cover an impossible range of the development of thought within philosophy, science, economics and psychology in a clear and highly readable style, in order to help the ordinary reader understand our current predicament: stresses resulting from real hardship caused by austerity politics are re-labelled ‘mental health disorders’.

The treatment offered for these disorders - Cognitive Behavioural Therapy - sets out to persuade you that the cause of your suffering is not your situation, but the way you think about it. There is no need to change your situation or the politics behind it; the therapy will alleviate your suffering simply by changing the way you think.

The book’s scope and profound insight elegantly elucidates how devotion to statistical analysis of numbers, however spuriously obtained, has seeped into every area of our public and private life, removing meaningful contact between doctor and patient, teacher and student, politicians and the public, feeding mistrust of science and blurring the lines between fact and fiction in every area of knowledge  - truly, a tsunami!

CBT: The Cognitive Behavioural Tsunami deserves to be read by everyone who is trying to understand what on earth is going on in the world today!
