Abstract

TACON and colleagues, The Department of Health, Exercise, and Sport Sciences, Texas Tech University, USA, have conducted a pilot study on mindfulness meditation for anxiety reduction in women with heart disease. Abstract: The misperception still exists that cardiovascular disease is not a serious problem in women despite the fact that heart disease is the leading cause of death in America. Evidence indicates that anxiety contributes to the development of heart disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Kabat-Zinn's mindfulness-based stress reduction programme to reduce anxiety in women with heart disease. Anxiety, emotional control, coping styles, and health locus of control were compared in treatment and control groups of women with heart disease. Post-intervention analysis provides preliminary support for the beneficial effects of this programme.
