Abstract

ANKE and RAMZAN, University of Sydney, NSW, Australia, have reviewed (39 references) the liver toxicity of Kava. Abstract: Kava kava (piper methysticum) has been implicated in liver failure, Even though on closer inspection the majority of cases are probably not connected to kava intake, hepatotoxic effects of kava can not be ruled out. The major theories of how kava affects the liver are summarized. In spite of all these theories, there is still no satisfactory answer. Further studies that may hopefully rehabilitate the reputation of kava are needed.
