The Quest for Seaweed in Human Nutrition

While many Victorian botanists were interested in classifying seaweeds, Edward Charles Cyril Stanford (1880s - 1900s) a London chemist, studied their composition and how this might benefit society. He recognized their remarkable mineral content and investigated the extraction of iodine, alginates and other compounds for burgeoning new industries. He was among the first to appreciate seaweed as an exceptional natural resource; not just Neptune's storm-cast gift collected from beaches by horse and cart to feed the fields.
The Second World War transformed seaweed from a scientific curiosity to a strategic resource as Britain needed domestic supplies of iodine, potash, alginates, even rope, giving rise to the Scottish Seaweed Research Association (SSRA 1944-51) and the Institute of Seaweed Research (1947-c1970). Its leading chemist, William Alexander Peter Black, produced what remain some of the finest longitudinal studies ever undertaken on the seasonal chemistry of common North Atlantic brown seaweeds.
Black's meticulous analysis showed how mannitol, laminarin, alginic acid, iodine, protein and ash varied throughout the year, providing a scientific basis for optimum industrial harvesting and establishing Britain as a world centre of seaweed chemistry and know-how. But as imported raw materials became cheaper and government priorities shifted, these initiatives declined and were finally closed. Purified products such as alginate extracts and food additives became the fashion. Britain retained expertise in seaweed chemistry, hydrocolloids and marine biology, but any idea of seaweed as an everyday whole food was further marginalized.
By the time interest in seaweed as a whole food re-emerged in Europe in the 1980s and 1990s, the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS, 1980 onwards) was broadening research into marine ecology, oceanography, and fisheries. The emphasis is on aquaculture, climate change, ecosystem services, biotechnology, environmental carbon reduction, and recently, seaweed cultivation.
From the late 90s, the Anglo-Norwegian Seagreens project reflected new professional and consumer interest in more natural, organic and nutritious food. Its purpose was to recycle seaweed's remarkable complex of micronutrients back into the human food chain. It pursued research not to extract substances from seaweed, but to understand the value of their whole composition in terms of relationship as well as amount.
Rather than asking how much alginate can be extracted, the project asked how consistent are the ratios of micronutrients? What is their role in human evolution, nutrition, and therapy? Which species are most suitable for permanent daily consumption? How can they be produced sustainably and consumed safely?
The progression, from ancient resource to chemistry, and from ecology to nutrition, is a coherent historical thread which underpins my new book, the story of the Seagreens project, to be published later this year.

Aberdeen Researcher Awarded $1.2M Grant to Uncover How New Traits Evolve
An Aberdeen-based researcher has been awarded a highly prestigious international research grant to investigate one of biology’s most enduring mysteries: how completely new traits evolve in animals.
Dr Victoria Sleight from the University of Aberdeen, is part of an international research team that has secured a research grant from the Human Frontier Science Programme (HFSP), one of the world’s most competitive and sought after funding schemes for fundamental science.
The $1.2 million award will support a three year project bringing together researchers in the UK, United States and Japan to explore the genetic origins of evolutionary novelty using the diversity of molluscs.

The project aims to uncover how new biological features arise over evolutionary time. Rather than relying solely on the emergence of entirely new genes, the research focuses on gene family expansion – a process in which genes are duplicated, creating multiple copies that can then evolve new functions.
Dr Sleight said: “Molluscs give us a remarkable window into evolution’s creativity. Snails, clams, squid and sea slugs show incredible diversity in form and function, and many of their most striking traits involve incorporating materials or components from their environment.
“Examples of this include shells that embed calcium and pigments derived from diet, and sea slugs that can steal stinging cells from their prey and use them for their own defence. We hypothesise that expansions in a group of genes known as pattern recognition receptors have enabled molluscs to safely recognise and integrate ‘non‑self’ materials – forming the basis of these evolutionary innovations.”
The project will test this idea by studying a wide range of different mollusc species, looking at their genes and how those genes work.
Beyond advancing fundamental evolutionary biology, the findings could reshape how scientists think about the origins of biological complexity and the genetic mechanisms that allow organisms to innovate.
“This project is about understanding the rules that govern life’s ability to invent. By studying how evolution has repeatedly found new solutions in molluscs, we hope to uncover principles that apply far beyond this group alone.”
Dr Sleight will collaborate with Dr Jessica Goodheart of the American Museum of Natural History, USA, who will lead the project, and Dr Manabu Bessho‑Uehara, of the Frontier Research Institute for Interdisciplinary Sciences, Tohoku University (concurrent appointment: Graduate School of Life Sciences, Tohoku University). Together, the team bring together expertise spanning evolutionary biology, genomics, developmental biology and biochemistry.

Carers Week: Rheumatologist Highlights the Hidden Toll of Caregiving on Joint Health and Well-being
Caring for a loved one is rewarding – but it can also take a serious toll on your own health. Research by GOPO® Joint Health reveals that over half of UK caregivers feel their physical (52%) or mental health (53%) has suffered due to caring responsibilities. [i]
In recognition of Carers Week (8th-14th June), Dr Rod Hughes, a highly esteemed rheumatologist with over 20 years of clinical expertise, spotlights the vital importance of supporting the health of the UK’s 5.8 million unpaid caregivers.[ii]
A survey, commissioned by GOPO® Joint Health – a leading supplement proven to reduce pain and stiffness and improve mobility – polled 501 self-defined caregivers. The findings reveal the true impact of caregiving on physical and emotional health. Six in ten UK caregivers report that they often neglect their own physical well-being (61%) or emotional needs (63%) due to the demands of caring, while 21% say they have given up regular physical activity or exercise altogether. More than half (55%) admit they feel guilty when prioritising their own well-being, and 54% say they rely on pain medication to manage their joint health.

Two-thirds (65%) worry that neglecting their own health will make it more challenging to keep caring in the future. The physical demands of caregiving, from assisting with mobility to prolonged periods of standing or lifting, can lead to increased strain on the joints and a higher risk of musculoskeletal pain. By maintaining joint health, managing stress and incorporating self-care practices, carers can sustain their ability to provide care in the long run.”

- Protect your joint health: “Caregiving often involves repetitive movements, heavy lifting, and prolonged periods of strain on the joints. To prevent long-term damage, ensure you are using proper lifting techniques, maintaining good posture and incorporating gentle exercises such as stretching or low-impact activities to support joint mobility. - Stay connected and seek support: “Carers often feel isolated, but staying connected with others can provide much-needed emotional and practical support. Whether through in-person groups, online forums or virtual coffee chats, sharing experiences with fellow carers can help reduce loneliness and create a sense of community. Seeking support from friends, family or professional networks can also help lighten the burden and provide reassurance that you are not alone.”

Steve spent his career assembling the answer. Andrew spent his building the machine. Neither man knew the other existed. Then they met.
Steve’s theory explained Andrew’s results. Andrew’s results were the proof of Steve’s theory. Two men, working alone, each holding one half of the same answer, who found each other near the end.
Dr Haltiwanger and others before him, such as Bjorn Nordenström and Ramesh Chouhan, lacked a quick and easy way to deliver the cell correction for all cancers.
