Conversing with Divinity – The Science of Yagyas
listed in yoga, originally published in issue 305 - September 2025
You may have read and heard of stories of gods appearing before men, interacting with them, answering their questions, granting them boons…these are not stories mere. Even in this day and age, sadhaks at Dhyan Ashram have conversations with divine entities and have seen them manifest before their eyes. Mantras, dhyan, yagya are some of the tools from the treasure trove of vedic gyan that can be used to interact with the energies that run this Creation. In this article we will delve on the ancient science of yagyas and its ability to manifest Divinity.
Bridging The Gap Between Manifest and Unmanifest
Energy can neither be created nor be destroyed; it only changes form. This is not only a fundamental law in physics but the basis of this creation. Everything we see around us is a form of this energy, which the vedic rishis called prana, having a specific frequency. The frequencies which lie in your in range are perceivable to you, those which lie below or above, you are unable to perceive, but that does not mean that they don’t exist. The frequencies of the physical dimension, are just a minor part of the endless spectrum of frequencies of the brahmand ["the universe" or "cosmos"].
Try out a simple experiment: light a candle and put your palm over the candle flame and keep moving your palm higher and higher, you will reach a point when you are no longer are able to feel the heat of the flame. Does that mean that no heat exists there?
Certainly not, as generation of heat is a continuous process but you feel it only till the point the limited sensitivity of your palms allows it to be sensed, not beyond that. So is the case with the creation. The various dimensions – manifested, semi-manifested and unmanifested exist. It is the level of your sensitivity, level of consciousness, that determines what dimension you are able to access. Vedic sages gave a simple tool to access the, the semi-manifested dimension, or the devlok which lies beyond the physical – yagyas [a sacrificial rite or performance of duty].

The First Yagya
The science of yagyas is as old as Creation. Brahma ji performed the first yagya. When He performed the yagya, he sacrificed a part of himself. From his sacrifice manifested 33 devs and devis, who took charge of various aspects of Creation. Brahma became the Prajapati, the Creator, responsible for physical creation. Shri Vishnu took upon the role of Preserver, He who runs the creation. Bhagwan Shiv became responsible for the journey back to the source.
Science Of Sacrifice
The term ‘yagya' translates as sacrifice. Yagya basically means a sacrifice of whatever is dear to you. The creation runs on someone’s sacrifice, like the food chain, one is sacrificed for the other. The bigger the sacrifice, the more the gain.
In every yagya there is a havi (oblation), that which is sacrificed or given back. And, this sacrifice is not of someone else, or of an animal; the sacrifice is of self or an aspect of self. Giving pain to an animal for sacrificing gets no punya (benefit). It gets you hells only.
Brahma ji sacrificed a part of himself. Ravan too sacrificed his head ten times and only then he had Shiv darshan. Puranic texts abound with instances of men, devs and asurs performing yagyas, and in all these yagyas they sacrificed a part or desire of self.

Different Kinds of Yagyas
Yagyas were a routine practice in vedic times. They are to be understood, not as a ritual, but as a perfect and precise science to invoke and channelize forces of Creation through the medium of fire.
There are close to 400 kinds of yagyas detailed in the Vedic Shastras towards different ends. Those for fulfillment of desires come under kamya-karmas. Those which are to be performed as a duty by every individual are called nitya-karmas. Those pertaining to an individual and his family are called ghrya-karmas. These are also called smarta-karmas since they belong to the Smritis. Then there are yagyas to be performed for well-being of mankind, these are detailed at length in Shrutis (Vedas) and so are called srauta-karmas.
Precision in a Yagya
There are specifications on the dimensions and shapes of yagya kunds (fire altars) for yagyas towards different ends. The time (muhurat) at which they are performed and the direction in which they are performed also hold special significance. The ingredients (samidha and samagri) also varies depending on the kind of yagya that is being performed. Most importantly, the mantras are given by a siddha Guru to the practitioner ensure that the oblations reach the deity that is being invoked and they manifest in the yagya fire.
To give you an example of the specificity and precision called for in the yagyas, there are 3 separate fires in the srauta rites in three differently shaped yagya kunds. Specific formulae and measurements for deriving the dimensions of the kunds, the distance between them and the laying of the bricks is detailed at length in the Shulba Sutras. The geometry equation which we today attribute to Pythagoras is also detailed in this text at least 500 years before Pythagoras.

Essentials for a Yagya
Agni or fire is the first word of the Rig Veda. In a yagya, fire is used as a medium to interact with divine forces. Fire is an element that can never be polluted and whatever goes into fire also gets cleansed. The same property of fire is harnessed in a yagya. In the earlier times havans were performed to cleanse the atmosphere, the samagri and samedha were used to release positive vibrations in the atmosphere and remove toxicity and negativity (both of the being and the environment). For the skeptic I would like to add that even today in the caves where sadhus live, a fire is constantly burned (dhuni), but do we ever hear of a sadhu contracting lung cancer or lung ailments?
However for a yagya to be successful it is important that the samagri (mixture), samidha (wood) and the ghrit (cow ghee) used are unadulterated. The thought (bhaav) of those participating in the yagya should be pure. The pronunciation (uchharan) of the mantras must be flawless with sensitivity to the crests and troughs. All these when combined with the surrender to the Guru, ensure that the offerings hence made to the agni are sent in their purest form to the right dimensions thereby affecting the desired transformation.
Signs of Success of Yagya
A yagya performed under the sanidhya of a Guru, with purity thought, ingredients and the correct chants, has the effect of completely changing the environment – the weather changes, air becomes fragrant, birds perch on the trees around, there is peace and stillness within and outside and diseases disappear – these are all indicators of warding off negativity and manifestation of positive forces in creation.
At Dhyan Ashram, the sadhaks have traversed various lokas and yugas with me and interacted with all kinds of entities. The power and efficacy of these yagyas gets further highlighted from the fact that there is no smoke in the fire from an authentic vedic yagya and formations of devs and Devis can be seen in yagya fire upon successful completion of the yagya. You can see many unedited photographs of manifestations in fire of yagyas performed by sadhaks on Dhyan Foundation website www.dhyanfoundation.com
