The Rise of Burnout and Unique Solutions to Fix It
listed in stress, originally published in issue 310 - May 2026
In my work as a former research scientist and current mind-body wellness expert, I have known and spoken with countless individuals sharing the same symptom: an exhaustion that sleep cannot fix. We are living in an era of intense overload, bombarded by a relentless stream of data and images that keep us in a constant state of sympathetic nervous system activation and super high alert.

Front Cover the Soul of Purpose
The real problem isn't just being busy; it is that we have lost our connection to inner prosperity - the intangible things in life that give us fuel and meaning. In my book, The Soul of Purpose, I talk about this in more detail, but to put it simply, inner prosperity creates the fuel needed for life, and this all starts with alignment. Burnout, in essence, is the friction that occurs when you disconnect from your innate nature and natural energy. In this article we’re going to discover a unique way to fix it. We don't need more rest; we need to understand our innate nature through our Unique Elemental Type.

The Myth of Generic Self-Care and the Power of Uniqueness
Most people make the same mistake: they try to cure burnout with standardized approach solutions incorporating rest and relaxation, like bubble baths or generic meditation apps, that don’t address the root cause of the problem. As humans, we are all unique, and it is recognizing and honoring our uniqueness that is the key to health and happiness. What serves as medicine for one person can act as a toxin for another. Very few people talk about this, but it is exactly why your self-care efforts sometimes leave you feeling more frustrated than before.
For example, if you have a Fire element dominant constitution and you try to sit in total silence while your mind is racing with ideas, you will only generate more internal heat and anxiety. We need a plan that fits your "factory settings." As I teach through the WELL Method , a deep connection to health and wellness emerges when you stop trying to fit into external molds and start living according to your internal blueprint.
The Elemental Blueprint: Your Soul’s Map
Everything in existence according to ancient eastern philosophy is composed of five great elements: Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Ether. Because we are part of nature, we have these same elements within us in a unique combination: this is your Elemental Blueprint, and it shapes everything about you. We all have all of the elements inside of us, but in different proportions, which give people unique talents, gifts, body types, and ways of processing both thoughts and emotions. Burnout occurs when there is a sustained mismatch between this blueprint and your environment or behavior. You aren't "broken"; you are simply misaligned. The key is understanding how these elements interact to support your higher purpose.
To break the loop of exhaustion, it’s important to understand your innate nature and elemental blueprint, so that you can then identify what part of it is out of balance and causing problems. Here are two important things to consider when it comes to your elemental nature that are directly tied to burnout.
- Do you know the strengths and gifts of your dominant elements, and are you utilizing these in your daily life? When we act in alignment with things we have innate talent in, energy increases automatically;
- Have you built your purpose and lifestyle around your innate talents and gifts? If not, this is the fast-track to exhaustion and burnout.
Innate Talents & Gifts of Elemental Types
Each element has its own strengths and weaknesses associated with it. No element is better than any other element – they are all unique and bring their own unique charm and expression to live. When we learn to live in alignment with the strengths of our elements, something interesting happens: you innately start to diminish the perceived weaknesses associated with them. Instead of spending time and energy trying to work on your flaws, when you work with the strengths of your elemental blueprint, you’re automatically aligning to and eliminating those weaknesses without ever tackling them directly! This goes against a lot of what people are taught to believe, but it’s 100% in alignment with the ancient philosophies that this system is rooted in. Work with your strengths. Build energy and momentum from that, and everything else works itself out.
Exploring the Elements And Their Unique Strengths
Each element has a corresponding sensory perception that shapes how you interact with the world. This isn’t just theory, it is a vibratory map on how you interact with your world.
Earth Element:
Earth element is connected to the sense of smell and also has a host of strengths it gives to people who are earth element dominant. Earth energy fosters a grounded presence, resilience under pressure and a natural capacity of building and protecting physical or material structures. It is also linked with resourcefulness, writing, disciplined focus, and the ability to bring ideas into tangible form through consistent, methodical action.
Individuals with dominant Earth element often bring stability, structure, and emotionally grounded thinking into everything that they do. High-pressure environments tend to bring out their best, where their consistency and strategic mindset become real assets. Earthy individuals are intrinsically connected with the sense of smell, meaning they are able to sense whether things are aligned or not.
Water Element
The water element is associated with adaptability, emotional intelligence, sensitivity, and the capacity to move gracefully through change. It supports talents related to empathy, nurturing, receptivity, creativity, and the ability to form meaningful connections with others. Individuals or systems influenced strongly by water elements often demonstrate resilience through flexibility, an intuitive understanding of emotional dynamics, and a natural ability to restore harmony and flow in challenging circumstances.
Those with a dominant Water element often experience the world through emotion, connection, and intuition. They tend to be adaptable, relational, and deeply attuned to the people and environments around them. Their relationships tend to run deep, and their creativity often shines brightest in moments of change, giving them an almost effortless ability to adapt, relate, and respond to whatever shifts around them. Watery individuals are deeply connected to their sense of taste and to their sense of self.
Fire Element
Fire element provides willpower, determination, focused intention, and the capacity for transformation. It supports the ability to eliminate what is unnecessary, direct energy toward a single purpose, and convert potential into action. Fire also has some strengthened manifestation through intensity, clarity, and decisive energetic movement.
People with a dominant Fire element often exude strong determination, vision, and natural leadership qualities. They tend to move toward goals with intensity, confidence, and a clear sense of direction. Their passion and drive allow them to initiate ideas, inspire others, and pursue meaningful achievements. Fiery people are deeply connected to the sense of sight, both physically and in terms of clarity of one’s focus and willpower.
Air Element
When individuals are dominant in Air element, you will see that they weave curiosity, vision, inspiration, and intellectual creativity into everything that they do. They think quickly, connect dots others miss, and have a natural gift for drawing people together around a spark of collaboration and innovation. These traits make them natural communicators, thinkers, and innovators. Airy individuals are strongly related to the sense of touch and thought, especially how thought travels through the body.
Ether Element
Those with a dominant Ether element often experience the world through awareness, sound, and subtle perception. They tend to be naturally intuitive, reflective, and are capable of being neutral to both praise and criticism. They can easily communicate ideas and insights with depth and clarity. They create and hold space for others, and as such often make great teachers, therapists or spiritual guides. These individuals exhibit strong listening skills and are masters in creative auditory expression, making them wonderful communicators, orators, and/or vocalists.
Identifying & Aligning With Purpose
Purpose is two-fold – it is a combination of the things that you are innately talented at, layered with formative life experiences that have shaped the things and ideals that you value. Oftentimes people find meaning from negative situations they encountered in life, making sure others don’t have to go through the same thing, or have the tools and resources necessary to get through bad situations if they do have to experience them. But it’s not always this way. For people who dive into their talents from an early age and have the family support and resources to nourish and encourage their growth, they build meaning and value early on from aligning with their talents. Whether your sense of meaning comes for positive or negative experiences does not matter - it’s just about knowing what has shaped you into the person you are today and knowing what you value and why.
When you combine your innate talents with what brings meaning, you automatically create inner prosperity, and as a byproduct of that, energy and motivation that alleviates and also prevents burnout. When we align with what we innately are, it builds energy and momentum. When we act against our innate nature, it depletes our energy. This is why aligning with both purpose and your elemental blueprint help to restore vitality and energy quickly. Purpose itself is shaped by your innate nature because of its strong connection to your dominant elements, so it is considered foundational in both preventing and healing burnout.
Quick Ways to Restore Harmony & Energy
Healing is not a destination; it is a continuous process of conscious realignment. When burnout begins to settle in, it is a signal that the friction between your modern lifestyle and your natural design is draining your vital energy. To reclaim your inner joy, you must learn to use your senses and your immediate environment as precision tools for recalibration.
The Five Senses Check-in:
Let’s begin with a Five Sense Check-In, you will tune into each of your senses and notice what you are experiencing in the moment.
Sit down and take a moment to tune into each of these and write down what you notice for each. Start with smell, then move to taste, then sight, then touch, then sound, respectively. It may take a bit of time to tune into some of these, and that's okay.
- Smell: What do you notice? Perhaps there is a faint scent in the air, like food, fresh laundry, or something subtle you hadn’t paid attention to before;
- Taste: What do you taste right now? It might be a lingering flavor, a sip of a drink, or simply the neutral taste in your mouth;
- Sight: Look around you and take in your environment. Notice colors, shapes, light, shadows, and movement;
- Touch: What physical sensations are present? You might feel the texture of your clothing, the support of the chair beneath you, or the temperature of the air on your skin;
- Sound: What can you hear? Notice both obvious and subtle sounds, perhaps voices, distant traffic, or the quiet hum of a room.
Take your time moving through each sense. As you do, allow yourself to fully experience each one without judgment. You may find that your mind begins to settle and your awareness becomes clearer. This exercise can help you feel more grounded and present.
After completing the check-in, take a moment to reflect. What stood out to you in each sense? What did you notice that you might normally overlook? You can write down your observations for smell, taste, sight, touch, and sound, using each sense as a simple guide.
Use this practice anytime you feel overwhelmed, distracted, or disconnected. It’s a gentle and reliable way to return to the present moment and reconnect with yourself.
Cultivate Daily Micro-habits
Having consistent daily routines is a powerful way to rewire your brain for positivity and comfort. Micro habits are a great option because they don’t take much time, making them much easier to stay consistent with. I personally like to start my day with a cup of tea. This is one of my micro-habits that promotes joy for me, and anchors me in the belief that it’s important to care for myself daily. You can also find things you enjoy that are aligned with your elemental strengths. Maybe it’s journaling (a great one for earth element), doing a short visualization practice (great for fire element), or even going for a walk out in nature. Try to cultivate 2-3 micro-habits to add to your daily routines and you will start seeing a shift in your energy.
