Prepare Yourself For Hay Fever Season: The 10 Natural Products Worth Stocking Up On \

For many people, the season of sneezing, itchy eyes, a blocked nose and headaches is right around the corner. Yup, we’re talking about hay fever, which, according to research conducted by Puressentiel[1] – the brains behind the evidence backed plant-based health products for everyday wellness needs, affects 32% of Brits.

The research also found that 15% of Brits suffer from dust mites and 18% have asthma, which can be triggered by various factors including allergies, such as pollen.[2]

GP, Dr Nisa Aslam, part of the Puressentiel expert hub explains:

“Hay fever is an allergic reaction to airborne substances such as plant pollen, grass, mould or dust mites.

“It occurs throughout a large chunk of the year: tree pollen is common from around early April, up to and through to early Autumn, with alder, birch, hazel and horse chestnut most likely to release pollen that triggers hay fever. Then there’s grass pollen which becomes an issue from May to August and weed pollen a problem from June to October. Although over a third of Brits (35%) say their allergies are worse in summer, spring and autumn are also common times for hay fever to kick in.”

Hay fever symptoms are more than frustrating however. The Puressentiel data has revealed that:

  • A quarter (25%) of Brits have skipped exercising outdoors due to allergies;
  • A fifth (20%) say that it stops them from going to parks or green spaces.

Half of Brits with allergies admit that this is because they don’t want to make their allergies worse while 35% say they simply have less energy due to allergies and 23% find it hard to breathe properly.

As well as this, 20% of Brits have actually stopped being active or exercising indoors too, because of their allergies. But, a lack of exercise makes 40% of Brits feel lazy, 32% are lethargic and 27% admit to feeling annoyed with themselves!

Speaking of the data, Dr Tim Bond, natural health specialist and researcher from the Puressentiel expert hub adds:

“Pollen counts are highest from April onwards, just as the days are getting longer and warmer, so it’s not ideal that Brits are having to avoid the outdoors. And, it’s clear that this impacts their overall mood. That’s why everyone who face the wrath of hay fever symptoms, needs to prepare themselves.”

There is no cure for hay fever, however natural plant-derived products can help to minimise symptoms, allowing you to continue with your day as normal.

Prepare for Hay Fever Season with Puressentiel

When a cough is getting in the way of life, try the Puressentiel Respiratory Cough Syrup, available from Holland & Barrett. 1. Puressentiel Respiratory Soothing Syrup

Plus, this syrup, which is now also available from Amazon, provides lasting protection for the upper respiratory tract.

  1. Puressentiel’s Respiratory Decongestant Nasal Spray

Blocked nose? Dr Nisa Aslam says Puressentiel’s Respiratory Decongestant Nasal Spray should be your go-to, available from Holland & Barrett.

“This is a completely 100% natural, sterile saline solution that softens blocked nasal mucosa with organic rosemary floral water, plus the soothing and decongestant essential oils of eucalyptus radiata, rosat geranium, niaouli, ravintsara, as well as propolis.”  An intervention trial using Puressentiel Respiratory Decongestant Nasal Spray in adults with a history of nasal congestion caused by allergic rhinitis showed its efficacy in minutes and benefits across five measures after eight days of use.

  1. Puressentiel Acti Pure Kids Syrup

For children, hay fever symptoms can be extremely uncomfortable. This syrup for kids  is made using a natural formula, containing pure organic honey, elderberry and erysimum plant extracts, plus vitamin D3. “Available from Amazon, the Puressentiel Acti Pure Kids Syrup is ideal for soothing and softening children’s sore throats and it helps unblock the nose and support the body’s natural immunity at the first signs of a cold.[3]  In user study results, 100% said their child felt better after taking the product and 96% would repeat purchase,” explains Dr Tim Bond.

  1. Puressentiel Respiratory Nasal Hygiene Hydrating Spray

Combining soothing calendula and sea-water, this spray delivers a three-in-one action: cleansing, hydrating and clearing the nasal cavity.

Dr Nisa Aslam explains: “The spray contains four essential oils with decongestant and analgesic properties  (Eucalyptus globulus, Peppermint, Rosemary, Thyme), plus four plant extracts with anti-inflammatory and anti-infectious effects (Cranberry, Blueberry, Elderberry and Green Tea) and glycerine for an osmotic, film forming and softening action.”

  1. Puressentiel Resp' OK Sinus Express Roll-On

Made from six organic essential oils - eucalyptus globulus, peppermint, spike lavender, picea mariana leaf oil, niaouli, marjoram - this roll on can soothe congested sinuses and free breathing when you’re feeling stuffy. Dr Tim Bond says: “It is also enriched with the hydrating natural, organic ingredient, Aloe vera and plant-based glycerine to help offer a fresh, decongesting effect.” Available from Amazon.

  1. Puressentiel Purifying Air Spray

According to the Puressentiel data, 61% of Brits believe that coughs are affected by poor air quality in the home, along with breathing problems (59%) and colds (53%). So make sure you have Puressentiel’s Purifying Air Spray on hand. Available from Boots, this spray combines 41 essential oils, including two species of lavender, eucalyptus, lemon and geranium (pelargonium), to combat airborne bacteria and viruses, fungal spores, and house-dust mites. In fact, a trial in patients with a history of respiratory symptoms showed significant improvements in lung function after just four weeks of use.”[4]

  1. Stay safe from bites and stings

Allergy season isn’t just rife with pollen. An increase in wetter weather has led to an increase in insect populations and therefore an increase in insect bites in the UK.[5] Dr Nisa Aslam adds: “Biting insects include spiders, mosquitoes and ticks. These aren’t just uncomfortable, but they can also be dangerous. For example, some ticks carry a specific bacteria that can cause Lyme disease. This can leave you with flu-like symptoms and for some people, some of these symptoms can last for years.[6]”

Available from Holland & Barrett, Boots and Amazon, try the Bite and Sting range from Puressentiel which provides a repellent action against biting and stinging insects and spiders, while also soothing bites and stings. It’s great for the entire family, including little ones. For adults and children aged 30 months and older,

Puressentiel Bite & Sting Repellent & Soothing Spray offers up to:

  • 8 hours protection against insects such as biting insects, certain spiders, tiger mosquitoes, common mosquitoes, and tropical mosquitoes
  • Seven and half hours against sandflies
  • Five hours protection against tics

And Puressentiel Bite & Sting Repellent & Soothing Spray can be sprayed over the top of clothes and on fabrics unlike other repellents. Puressentiel Bite & Sting Repellent & Soothing Spray is also effective against Lyme disease as well as Zika fever, malaria, dengue fever, yellow fever, and chikungunya. Using 100% natural ingredients, the spray has a clinically proven repellent action based on a powerful active ingredient Citriodiol® - derived from lemon eucalyptus essential oil. Plus, Puressentiel Bite & Sting Repellent & Soothing Spray soothes bites thanks to its five essential oils;

  • Tea Tree
  • Citronella Java
  • Lavandin Grosso
  • Niaouli
  •

There is also the Puressentiel Bite & Sting Repellent Spray for sensitive skin, available from Amazon. The spray contains a scientifically-proven and patented formula providing effective and gentle protection. It’s suitable for sensitive skin, including babies from six months. Dr Nisa Aslam adds: “The 100% plant-based formula is enriched with Aloe Vera and contains no nasties, including no synthetic fragrance. It offers effective protection for up to six and a half hours on common mosquitoes (Culex pipiens); up to six hours on tropical mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti, Culex quinquefasciatus); up to five and half hours on sandflies (Phlebotomus duboscqi); up to four hours on ticks (Ixodes ricinus).” It also provides up to eight hours of hydration for soft and soothed skin.

Check out also Puressentiel’s best-selling Soothing Roll-On. Available in Boots and Holland & Barrett, this roll-on solution from Puressentiel is a small and convenient aid to help soothe and calm insect bites as well as any wasps, bees and hornets which may have been sleeping and lurking away. Puressentiel’s Soothing Roll-On is also great for calming bites from mosquitoes, horseflies, tics, mites, house flies, gnats, fleas and spiders. Dr Nisa Aslam explains: “Its formula is made of 100% natural active ingredients with a unique blend of 11 pure essential oils including Java Lemongrass, Ceylon Lemongrass, Clove and Eucalyptus.”

Being naturally-derived, the Puressentiel Bite and Sting range is safe for clothes and the products  have a herbal scent, rather than the strong, often unpleasant odour that can come from DEET-based repellents.

Dr Tim Bond adds: “Being prepared for allergy season can help you to avoid the frustrating symptoms that so many of us suffer from. These can make life unbearable for some, but with Puressentiel’s natural range of products, which harness the power of plants and essential oils, Brits can breathe easy and get on with their day.”

Mental Health Awareness Week: Psychologist Reveals Five-Minute Habits to ‘Take Action’ Against Stress

Modern life is leaving nearly 24 million people feeling ‘always on’ with no time to switch off.[i] New research reveals that over half of UK adults (56%) often feel too busy to spare even five minutes for their emotional wellbeing.[ii] This Mental Health Awareness Week (11th-17th May), as the nation is encouraged to ‘Take Action’ for mental wellbeing, experts are urging people to focus on small, manageable daily habits that can help reduce stress and create moments of calm – even on the busiest days.

The national study, commissioned by Kalms Herbal Remedies, highlights how relentless busyness is taking its toll:

  • Nearly a quarter of respondents report stress (24%) and fatigue (24%) in the past month, while 22% struggle with sleep difficulties and almost one in five (18%) experience anxiety
  • Many are even delaying basic needs, such as drinking enough water (22%), going to bed on time (19%), or preparing a proper meal (14%)
  • Alarmingly, 12% say they have put off showering and 7% have delayed going to the toilet because they felt too busy

Instead of prioritising rest and relaxation, many adults find themselves absorbed in tasks that drain rather than restore them. On a typical day, respondents average 50 minutes commuting, 58 minutes working outside normal hours, and 62 minutes mindlessly scrolling through social media.

Small Actions, Meaningful Change

Recognising the importance of time well spent, the survey found that almost half of adults (48%) believe dedicating small, manageable moments to their emotional wellbeing could improve their day, with 46% agreeing they would benefit from more opportunities to slow down.

When asked how they would spend extra time each day, the nation dreamed of quality time with loved ones (25%), spending time outdoors (23%) or simply catching up on sleep (22%). If they had just five to ten minutes available, people would opt for a short walk (30%), make a cup of tea (20%) or have a relaxing bubble bath (18%).

Yet barriers to self-care remain. Stress (19%), competing responsibilities (17%) and lack of time (15%) top the list. One in ten (13%) admit feeling guilty about prioritising themselves, with a similar number (11%) unsure where to even start.

With many people unsure where to start, Chartered Psychologist Suzy Reading says emotional wellbeing does not require a major lifestyle overhaul, just small moments of intentional action throughout the day:

"Kalms’ findings underscore the obstacles many of us face when it comes to emotional wellbeing. But the solutions don’t need to be complicated or time-consuming. Even the smallest steps can make a genuine difference – and it’s not just about the obvious foundations of sleep, nutrition and exercise. My mantra is that self-care is health care, and it can be as simple as finding tender, tiny pauses in your day to restore balance and calm."

Suzy’s Five-Minute Habits to Feel Calmer and Less Stressed:

To support Mental Health Awareness Week’s call to ‘Take Action’, Suzy shares simple habits that can help create moments of calm even on the busiest days:

  • Give self-care the same respect you would a job: “Carve out time in your diary, just as you would for any important appointment – this creates a space that’s yours to use. Research shows that writing down plans makes us far more likely to follow through, helping you make self-care a habit.”[iii]
  • Commit to regular self-check ins: “Pause and listen to what your mind and body need instead of just ticking a box. Place a hand on your heart, take a few mindful sips of water and ask yourself, ‘what do I need?’ Let your observations guide your next step, whether it’s yoga, music or simply resting.”
  • Try awe hunting: “Step outside for 2–3 minutes and notice the sky, architecture, trees or birdsong. Even a brief moment in nature can lower stress and help restore your focus.”
  • Look at calming imagery: “If you can’t get outside, 44% of UK adults find calm by viewing peaceful scenes, showing screen time can be used positively. Explore the Kalmfulness Gallery for a quick dose of tranquillity – perfect even on the busiest of days.”
  • Track the little things: “Note down small, positive experiences – times you genuinely laughed, savoured your cup of tea or enjoyed a moment with a loved one or pet. Jot down what happened, why it felt good and how it made you feel. These micro-measures boost motivation, help you notice progress, and offer a simple antidote to worries when you read them back.”
  • Do small acts of kindness: “Give someone a compliment or make them a cup of coffee. Science shows that these gestures boost endorphins, creating a ‘helper’s high’ that benefits both you and the recipient.”
  • Turn to nature’s toolkit: “A third of UK adults (32%) say that herbal remedies support their wellbeing, offering a gentle source of support during challenging times. Valerian root[iv] is known for its calming properties and ability to promote restful sleep, whilst research shows that lavender oil, when taken orally,[v] can help relieve stress and anxiety.”
  • Simply breathe and let go: “Try ‘Candle Breath’: inhale through your nose, exhale through pursed lips as if cooling a cup of tea. It slows your heart rate and triggers relaxation. When stress rises, try the ‘Shrug and Sigh’: inhale, clench your fists, lift your shoulders, then exhale with a sigh, letting them relax. Just a few rounds can release tension, and you can do these anywhere – commuting, waiting for the kettle, or even on the loo!”[vi]

Suzy Concludes:

“Finding calm doesn’t mean overhauling your life. It’s about finding pockets of peace in the everyday. Small steps are achievable, and they really can change how we feel.”

incognito Celebrates 20th Anniversary with New Launch and King’s Award

incognito, the UK’s leading PMD-based insect repellent company, is celebrating its 20th anniversary by launching a mini version of its popular Hair &  Body Wash, as part of its newly launched Simple Step System. Because it’s a popular impulse buy, incognito has made the Hair & Body Wash exclusive to the independent trade and their wholesalers. This popular, environmentally friendly company has extra cause to celebrate as it has just won a prestigious King’s Award for its sustainability.

incognito was set up 20 years ago by Howard Carter, after he survived two near-death experiences as a result of the most deadliest diseases, Malaria and Dengue Fever, as he recounted on BBC Radio 4’s You & Yours programme. “There is no cure for dengue, like many other mosquito borne diseases; the best cure is prevention,” says Howard, “So, the seed was firmly planted in my mind that I was going to find something that really worked against mosquitoes and ticks, along with being safe for humans and the environment; thus incognito was born.”

Its latest exciting launch comes off the back of 2 major successful launches last year – for its unique patented wooden Insect Repellent Bracelet and Necklace. The Mini Hair & Body Wash is also part of its new Simple Step System, which takes a layered approach to insect protection, designed to work in harmony rather than in conflict: Step 1 is Prepare Your Skin, Step 2 is Apply Insect Repellent, Step 3 is Layer with Extras and Step 4 is Ambient & Afterbite. The Mini Hair & Body Wash was launched in response to a growing demand for greener travel-friendly sized products and relates to Step 1 of the Simple Step System.

Traditional hair and body products contain ingredients and fragrances that can attract insects. Replacing these with incognito Mini Hair & Body Wash will help camouflage you from bites and stings while nourishing your skin and scalp. The new incognito Mini Hair & Body Wash is an ideal travel size or for those who get bitten in the UK.

This scientifically formulated, 100% Natural, 2-in-1 shampoo and shower gel also enhances your protection against biting and stinging insects. Made with organic bergamot, tea tree oil, neem and java citronella, the product has valuable antiseptic and anti-fungal qualities that nourish your skin and help camouflage you from insects.

It is perfect for daily use. Use in conjunction with incognito’s award-winning insect repellent range for complete protection. Apply to wet hair and body, lather, and rinse thoroughly. Use daily to stay clean and protected from insects & ticks. Patch test on babies under 1 year.

incognito natural Mini Hair & Body Wash is free from irritants, parabens and detergents. It has an inviting, pleasant, fresh citrus aroma. The packaging is made from renewable sugarcane plastic and is recyclable. The hair and body wash is vegan certified and has never been tested on animals. 10% of profits are donated to charity.

And it has just been announced that His Majesty The King has approved the Prime Minister’s recommendation that incognito should receive a King’s Award for Enterprise in the Sustainable Development category this year. The King’s Award for Enterprise is a globally recognised mark of excellence, celebrating the achievements of a company. Chairman of incognito, Howard Carter, comments,

“All of us at incognito are delighted and  honoured for winning our third Kings Award for Sustainable Development. Continuing to put the planet above profit reaffirms our commitment to the environment. Our entire team is proud.”

incognito has also just won a 15th Beauty Shortlist Award in the category of Best Daily SPF – Summer / Protection for their popular Mineral Sunblock Insect Repellent.

incognito’s new mini Hair & Body Wash is exclusive to the independent trade and their wholesalers, and is supported by a national advertising and PR campaign. Visit www.lessmosquito.com for more info.

Hydration Simplified: What Studies Say About Tea And Daily Fluids

Peer-Reviewed Research Highlights That Tea Can Contribute Meaningfully To Fluid Intake, While New Survey Reveals Public Confusion About Hydration Guidelines.

Staying properly hydrated is a cornerstone of good health, yet new research suggests that many Brits remain unsure about how to meet their daily fluid needs. This International Tea Day – 21st May 2026 - a fresh look at the nation’s hydration habits highlights how tea can play an important role in helping people reach recommended intake levels.

The new consumer research survey of 1,000 adults[1] analysed by the Tea Advisory Panel (TAP; teaadvisorypanel.com) reveals that only four in ten Brits (38%) know that the NHS recommends six to eight servings of fluids a day.[2] Misunderstandings were common in the survey results.

  • Over a quarter (28%) thought three to five servings were sufficient
  • 12% said one to two
  • 8% didn’t know
  • 14% assumed at least nine servings were needed.

Dietitian Dr Carrie Ruxton from TAP explains,

“Hydration is essential for everything from brain function to skin integrity and heart health, so it’s vital that people understand how much they need to drink and what they should be drinking. Tea is often overlooked in discussions about daily fluids, but scientific studies show that it contributes just as effectively as water to overall hydration.”[3]

On average, Brits drink between four and five cups of tea a day, closely matching the optimal for health benefits. However, the TAP reviewed survey also revealed confusion about whether tea counts towards daily fluid targets. Fewer than half (47%) correctly stated that tea does count, while nearly a third (30%) thought intake should be limited to one or two cups a day.

Some respondents were completely off the mark. Over one in 10 (12%) wrongly believed tea didn’t count at all and that a glass of water was needed for every cup to offset dehydration, while around 11% assumed only plain water counted toward the NHS recommendation “Confusion about tea’s hydrating properties persists despite evidence from scientific studies. Research published in the British Journal of Nutrition shows that moderate black tea consumption of four or six cups has a similar hydrating effect to water.[4] Similarly, a 2022 study in the European Journal of Nutrition indicates that green tea can help maintain fluid balance, even in mildly dehydrated adults,[5]” says Dr Tim Bond, chemist, researcher and a member of TAP.

According to the survey, only 38% of respondents associated drinking tea with healthy hydration for men’s health, while 34% said they felt their skin was more hydrated after drinking tea. And when choosing between tea and tap water for overall health, people were equally split between the two (38%), while a quarter thought they were both beneficial.

Despite some misconceptions, the TAP reviewed survey highlights that tea continues to be a preferred drink for hydration and daily wellbeing. Yet 16% of respondents admitted that concerns about dehydration stop them from drinking tea more often, illustrating the need for clearer public messaging on tea’s role in hydration.

GP and a member of TAP, Dr Nisa Aslam comments,

“It’s important to emphasise that tea can be part of a healthy hydration strategy. Caffeinated tea does not dehydrate the body when consumed in normal amounts as the caffeine level is less than half that seen in an average Americano. Having around four daily cups of tea can help people meet fluid recommendations while also enjoying the sensory and ritual benefits that come with tea drinking.”

With hydration being a key part of overall health, from cognitive performance to skin appearance, tea offers a practical, relaxing way for people to meet daily fluid needs. For many Brits, it remains their preferred choice of hot drink, reflecting both taste and ritual, as well as a growing understanding that tea contributes to daily fluid intake.

“As International Tea Day shines a spotlight on the cultural and nutritional significance of tea around the world, the TAP reviewed survey findings provide a timely reminder that simple, enjoyable habits like a daily cuppa can support healthy hydration, complement other fluids, and contribute to overall wellbeing,” concludes Dr Carrie Ruxton.

The Tea Advisory Panel: The Tea Advisory Panel is supported by an restricted educational grant from the UK TEA & INFUSIONS ASSOCIATION, the trade association for the UK tea industry. The Panel has been created to provide media with impartial information regarding the health benefits of tea. Panel members include nutritionists; dieticians and doctors.
