What is Psychotherapy, Counselling, Psychology and Psychiatry?

The words ‘Psychotherapy’, ‘Therapy’ and ‘Counselling’ are very similar and sometimes interchangeable. Put simply, they all refer to the process of meeting with a trained therapist in order to assist the management of personal issues.

Counsellor: a Counsellor is specifically trained in Counselling Theory and Skills as well as practical experience of one-on-one counselling. Counsellors usually conduct short to medium term work.

Psychotherapist: a Psychotherapist is trained in the same way as a counsellor but will often work at a deeper level than a counsellor so psychotherapy will typically be medium to long-term.

Counselling Psychologist: in addition to having the same sort of training as a Counsellor or Psychotherapist, a Counselling Psychologist will also have a degree in Psychology.

Psychiatrist: a Psychiatrist is a medically trained pratitioner who offers diagnostic evaluation and a treatment program of medication or psychological therapy.

If you are looking for psychotherapy and counselling that is skilled, confidential and tailor-made to your needs, our specialists can offer therapeutic options such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT), Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy, Existential-Phenomenological and Psychodynamic psychotherapy.
