Abstract

GALPER and co-workers, Center for the Study of Complementary and Alternative Therapies, University of Virginia Health System, Charlottesville, VA, USA, have reviewed (64 references) the current state of mind-body interventions for vascular complications in diabetes. Abstract: Impaired peripheral blood flow is one of the complications of diabetes mellitus. Many affected individuals suffer from leg pain, disability, and impaired quality of life. Conventional treatments include lifestyle modifications, exercise, medication, and surgery. However these approaches are often impractical or insufficient. Thermal biofeedback, alone or in conjunction with other mind-body techniques, improves peripheral circulation, pain, neuropathy, ulcers, walking ability, and quality of life. It is noninvasive, cost-effective, and can be used in community-based diabetes self-management.
