Abstract

FLEET, Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center, Tufts University, Boston, MA 02111 USA writes that research studies examining the relationship between dietary selenium intake and cancer risk have demonstrated that low selenium intake is associated with higher cancer rates . The author states that a recent well-controlled intervention trial studied whether selenium supplementation can prevent cancer in people with a history of skin cancer and who live in areas with low soil selenium levels.

Results

The incidence of total, lung, colorectal and prostate cancers was significantly reduced by the intervention, although skin cancer rates were not reduced. These data require confirmation however they suggest that adequate selenium intake is essential for cancer prevention.
