Abstract

ARNOLD and THORNBROUGH, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles School of Medicine USA write that Traditional Chinese Herbal Medicine (TCHM) uses naturally occurring plant, animal and mineral substances to treat a variety of human diseases and that considering the growth in popularity of complementary and alternative medicine, all physicians will see patients who are using TCHM.

and Discussion: The authors write that TCHM should be taken under the supervision of a provider whose herbal training and competence is commensurate with the intensity of the herbal regimen and the severity of the clinical condition. The authors write that TCHM can be valuable in the treatment of all types of pain, either as a primary or adjunctive therapy, depending on the clinical situation. TCHM therapies are prescribed within the framework of a unique diagnostic approach, and are highly specific regarding the type and location of pain.
