Abstract

ANDRASIK, Institute for Human and Machine Cognition, University of West Florida, 40 South Alcaniz Street, Pensacola, FL 32501, USA, describes behavioural treatment approaches to chronic headache. Abstract: The usefulness of a number of behavioural treatments, chiefly relaxation, biofeedback, and cognitive behavioural therapy, for uncomplicated forms of migraine and tension headaches has long been known. The literature is much more scarce for chronic, complicated, and refractory forms of headache. This paper reviews existing work on the use of behavioural therapies for headaches associated with medication overuse; chronic, daily, high intensity headaches; refractory headaches; cluster headaches; chronic tension headaches; posttraumatic headaches; and headaches accompanied by psychiatric co-morbidity. The paper concludes with a discussion of the role of environmental and familial factors in influencing chronic headache. Suggestions for future research are made.
