We live in an era of hyperstimulation. The rhythms of life to which we have evolved have been superseded by constant stimulation not allowing our systems to reset effectively. We can see how the modern lifestyle is damaging to our social and physical environment. This impacts on how people present to the practitioner and respond to treatment.

We also have a situation in which increasing numbers of patients are presenting with cognitive impairment. Whether this is the result of response to chronic overstimulation or other factors such as diet, pollution, toxins and environmental issues or a combination is not totally clear.

As practitioners we face these issues without a clear roadmap of how to deal with them. In this article I will discuss ways in which we can support patients in their healing journey, creating a low stress environment for the therapeutic interaction, giving them tools to modulate their autonomic nervous system and finally recognising and managing the pathological fallout from the chronic assault on their cognitive systems.

From a scientific point of view consciousness has been viewed as ‘the hard problem’ because of the difficulty in defining it. We take consciousness for granted without really understanding what it is. Conventionally it is assumed that consciousness arises as an emergent phenomenon from increasing complexity. The materialist view being that it is an epiphenomenon with evolutionary benefits. The brain is posited to be the organ of self-awareness in which consciousness arises from processing of stimulations of neuronal networks interacting with the external and internal environment.

However, the sheer complexity of the phenomenon and the difficulty in understanding phenomena such as the sensation of colour and other qualia suggest that the truth may be found in another paradigm.

I will briefly examine some intriguing ideas which may lead to a more satisfactory explanation for this fundamental experience.

Rupert Sheldrake presented the concept of Morphic Fields in the 1980s. These are fields of information that underlie the organization of physical forms and behaviours, acting as "formative causes" rather than relying solely on material or energetic mechanisms. The theory then proposes the concept of Morphic Resonance, which is the mechanism by which these fields work, enabling memories to pass across time and space from past organisms to similar present ones.

Sheldrake argues that human consciousness is not restricted to the inside of the brain but extends beyond it, similar to how magnetic fields extend beyond a magnet.

Dean Radin of the Institute of Noetic Science has been researching parapsychology over many years says: “Consciousness is real and impactful – Once questioned, it’s now accepted as a fundamental part of human experience. Science meets the mystical – Practices like manifesting and affirmations may have measurable effects. Non-locality exists – Reality may be influenced by factors beyond time and space. Healing through consciousness – Compassion, self-awareness, and intention can lead to real biological changes. We still don’t have all the answers – But the exploration of consciousness is gaining serious scientific momentum”.

However, one of the most intriguing theories of the mechanism of consciousness has arisen as the result of the collaboration between one of the most significant scientists of the modern era, Roger Penrose, Nobel Prize winner in collaboration with Stuart Hamero:, Professor Emeritus, Departments of Anaesthesiology and Psychology, University of Arizona.

Having been inspired by Gödel’s Theorem that shows that not everything is computable Penrose argues that human consciousness is non-algorithmic and thus is not capable of being modelled by a conventional computer. Penrose hypothesizes that quantum mechanics plays an essential role in the understanding of human consciousness. The collapse of the quantum wave function is seen as playing an important role in brain function.

Hamero: observed that anaesthesia selectively depressed the functioning of neuronal microtubules which correlates with the depression of consciousness during anaesthesia.

Their theory Orch-OR (Orchestrated Objective Reduction) posits that consciousness arises from quantum computations within microtubules inside brain neurons. These computations, or "orchestrated" quantum wave function collapses (OR), are thought to produce moments of conscious awareness, linking brain activity to fundamental quantum gravity processes. These moments are orchestrated together to provide the experience of consciousness in the same way as the musical notes in a symphony are orchestrated to create a piece of music.

Whilst still controversial in mainstream thinking the theory has been around for number of decades and has gained support through continued research. It has led to the potential to accept that consciousness is non-local and to the intriguing possibility that damage to the microtubules could be implicated in disturbed cognition. We will examine these in due course.

In terms of the therapeutic encounter, the quality of the outcome in treatment is in part dependent on a good therapeutic relationship between patient and practitioner. A patient that is fearful and stressed will not derive the same benefit from the interaction compared to someone who is at ease and relaxed. Therefore, it is important to control as many factors as possible that enhance the healing process. A practitioner that is reassuring and calm and a space that is relaxed and welcoming make a big difference. My principles are to create a ‘sacred space’ (Sacred: reverently dedicated to some person, purpose, or object). This entails a well-thought-out physical and emotional space. The result of which is a fear free, parasympathetic dominant environment.

In the case of someone who has a chronically stressed sympathetic nervous system the use of a simple CV4 (compression of the fourth ventricle) technique during treatment can help facilitate a more receptive state. They can be taught to do this for themselves.[1]

Similarly, the use of the basic exercise from polyvagal theory can be used to reset the nervous system. [2], [3]

Craniosacral therapy is found to be helpful in the treatment of cognitive issues. Getting cerebro spinal fluid circulating through the central nervous system will help to draw nutrients into the system, help to detoxify the terrain and stimulate the vascular system including the glymphatic system.

Patients often report improvement of symptoms after treatment. Ideally, they should be treated quite often, maybe a few times per week. This is mostly impractical and so it is useful to supplement treatment with, diet, lifestyle and supplement regimes.

According to Exley the ubiquity of aluminium in the environment is associated with many chronic diseases including, Alzheimer’s (“..no aluminium, no Alzheimer’s). Parkinson’s and MS. It is very simple to encourage patients to drink spring water rich in silicic acid which has been demonstrated to eliminate aluminium from the body. [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]

Penrose and Hamero: suggest that damage to microtubules leads to the characteristic tau protein tangles in Alzheimer’s neurons and that amyloid plaque is a by-product rather than cause. As with cancer the research effort may well be going down a blind alley despite all the resources. There is some evidence that low intensity ultrasound can help to repair the microtubules. Ultrasound units can be obtained for around £100. [9]

EZ Water [10]

Exclusion Zone water, identified by Pollack is structured water that exists in cells and the extra cellular matrix. It arises as the result of bulk water in contact with a hydrophilic surface. This creates layers of water with a hexagonal H3O2 molecular structure which is negatively charged. Hydrophilic boundaries occur on cell membranes and proteins. This process creates a kind of battery with electrical potential.

Zeta potential describes overall negative charged boundaries such as between red blood cells which keep them from clumping and the loss of both is associated with mechanism that contribute to chronic illness.

Infra-red light grows the exclusion zone and can contribute to the restoration of function in the tissues and cells. The use of an Infra-red-light box may well support patients with cognitive pathology.

In my opinion we are undergoing a true paradigm shift in our understanding of the human body. Perhaps the most significant aspect of this is the emergence of plausible explanations of the Hard Problem. The experts cited in this article have all been working on their ideas since at least the 1980s and following much mainstream scepticism, they are still standing and a new generation of researcher are taking their ideas more seriously.

For us practitioners, these concepts are opening doors to new, gentle and hopefully, effective answers to the wave of chronic disease affecting our population.
