LSSM - BTEC Level 5 Professional Diploma Soft Tissue Therapy

London School Sports Massage LSSM is a small independent training provider that has established its own unique customised BTEC Level 5 qualification. It has been evolving since 1989 through the clinical experience of Mel Cash and his expert team of leading tutor / therapists. As they have developed their clinical skills over the years to offer ever better treatment to the clients that come to their clinics, they have added these skills into the training programme. This means that our qualification has been solidly built on the proven techniques and methods that we know work well in the real clinical environment and help our clients the most.

Mel-Cash-3-Books-Collection

We have also adapted to changes in modern healthcare. When we began in 1989 the job was mostly Sports Massage because in those days the National Health Service treated the common injuries among the general population, but with cutbacks in NHS funding it can no longer afford to do this. There have also been changes in the way Physiotherapy is taught and it is now becoming mostly exercise-based with very little actual hands-on treatment. In response to these changes we have developed our scope of practice so we can now safely and effectively treat minor and chronic injuries among the whole population using high quality hands-on treatment methods.

To reflect this, our qualification has the title ‘Soft Tissue Therapy’. Although it still includes ‘Sports Massage’ we now do so much more than this and we are no longer defined by the word ‘massage’ either because we include much more advanced soft tissue treatment techniques. This is the only qualification of its kind in the UK and is hard to compare it with any others.

The qualification has been designed specifically for mature (non-school leaver) students who can only study part-time but are looking for a rewarding and stimulating lifetime career. It involves 12 weekend workshops spread over one-year where we teach all the practical hands-on skills. In between these weekends, students have to complete written assignments which cover all the essential underpinning theoretical knowledge they need.

The aim of Soft Tissue Therapy is to assess, treat and help rehabilitate all manner of minor and chronic injuries which can result from sports activity, occupational stresses, postural imbalances, past injuries or illness. It not only tries to treat the injury but also identify the underlying causes of the problem in an effort to prevent a re-occurrence and improve physical well-being over the longer term.

LSSM runs this Diploma courses throughout the year in London, Southampton and Brighton. We have also spread the qualification to a few other associated training centres in Exmouth, Bristol, Oxford and Cambridge (see The Institute for Soft Tissue Therapists - for their details).

Shock, Stress & Serotonin

Chronic stress which can be physiologically and emotionally demanding is now known to affect the neurotransmitter serotonin (5HT) in the brain which in turn has an adverse effect on the hypothalamus. This is responsible for acting as a thermostat for regulating body’s temperature and it not only controls body temperature, but also hunger, thirst, fatigue, sleep and our circadian rhythms. Post traumatic stress disorder, is one of the more extreme responses to chronic stress and is a direct result of any form of shock whether traumatic, sudden and unexpected because it catches us unawares or the more insidious long slow type that comes from ongoing non life-affirming situations. The repeated exposures to unpredictable stressors can deregulate the body's normal stress responses and be a causative factor in pathological alterations in mood, and cognition function. If left unchecked, it can lead to a devastating effect on the body’s energy system and physiological functions and can over time lead to ill health.

Shock, Stress & Serotonin

Clockwise from Left to Right: Waratah, Sturt Desrt Pea, Arego Adapt and Emergency Rescue

The beauty of flower essences is that they are excellent at clearing deep seated shock at the root & the ensuing stress from the incidents of shock held buried within the system. Most essence lines include an essence or a combination blend that does just that, whether it be Bach Five flower Rescue Remedy or the potent combination hailing from the Flower Essence of Australian, Emergency Rescue which is designed for all emergency and crisis situations, shock, trauma, post traumatic & for the build up as well as deep seated stressors which result in an inability to cope effectively in extreme situations.

Emergency Rescueincluding flower essences Crowea, Fringed Violet, Grey Spider Flower, Waratah, Sturt Desert Pea, Sturt Desert Rose, Red Grevillea - is formulated to clear shock and trauma, galvanise the body's self healing forces to enable us to deal with courage in a crisis and the extreme situations that throw us off balance. The resulting effect on system is that it upsets our neurotransmitters especially the serotonin levels stressing our circadian rhythm.

Sometimes it is necessary in this day and age to approach shock & stress in a twofold way, by not only addressing the originating cause but also dealing with the symptoms; that is where a natural neurotransmitter up regulator of the serotonin neuro-pathways has an important role to play in readily remedying the situation.

The serotonin pathways are responsible: Sleep, mood management, brain, immune function, sexual function, skin health, relaxation fat metabolism and ageing

Made from Seroctin, a Zea Mays  polyphenols extract Adapt is the brain child of its creator Dr Don Coplin and has proved to naturally allow the body to modulate & balance its own serotonin levels, and has been helpful with improved sleep quality, efficient REM Sleep and most importantly mood management i.e. tension, irritability, low mood leading to mild to severe depression, which left unchecked can become chronic. Certainly I have found it helpful as a double act with Emergency Rescue, in engendering a sense of calm, equilibrium and hope when the black cloud of depression descends & suicidal thoughts creep in and especially when a client is close to the edge of despair with nowhere else to go!

The Order of Dionysis & Paul – A Brief Historical and Spiritual Overview

by Allan Armstrong

Published by Imagier Publishing. 2018. Paperback. £12.50. ISBN: 978-1-910216-28-6

This book tells the story of a rebirth that exists both outside and within duality. It exists outside of duality in that it concerns the emergence of a spiritual essence within the soul of the Order, but as described by the records of the Order, that emergence clearly took place within this world. It is clear that what happened needed to happen, as this account tells – there were no accidents or mishaps, only opportunities to grow and to learn.

The Order of Dionysis and Paul

Western civilization has been subjected to a thousand-year rule of Logic and a four-hundred-year rule of Reason. However, as I write, it is obvious that our civilization is in deep trouble, because the lessons we need to learn concerning land and financial reform, self-control and tolerance, are not issues Logic or Reason can cope with – for these are spiritual problems requiring spiritual remedies, which are not readily found within the parameters of the rational world. Traditionally, prayer and meditation had been the means by which we found the answers to such problems. Unfortunately, they too succumbed to the force majeure of logic and reason. Indeed, since the beginning of the Enlightenment, reason has become the preferred method of acquiring insight into the mysteries of religion.

The early Church knew a pathway that led its people from the bestial state they had been born into, towards a state of spiritual enlightenment. These two states are described (I Corinthian 15: 31-51) as the first and second Adam. Before Constantine, students were taught to follow this path before they were baptized; but after Constantine emancipated and elevated the Church, it slowly lost sight of that ancient path and by the end of the first millennium it began to rely more on logic than inspiration. In the 17th century, the rule of Reason under the title of the Enlightenment gradually dominated the field. The result, as seen today, is a divided Church dependent upon the literal interpretation of countless ‘reasonable’ versions of Scripture to show them the way forward.

In this fascinating account given in the Brief History of the Order of Dionysis & Paul the author, Allan Armstrong, describes how the members of the Order, through trial and tribulation learnt to follow that ancient Path to the best of their ability, a path that goes before them as “a pillar of fire by night and a pillar of smoke by day.”

“There is an agent in my soul which is perfectly sensitive to God.

I am as sure of this as I am that I am alive.”

Meister Eckhart: Sermons 6.

Sports Massage in the Reduction of Central Sensitization

Pain can be fickle - a bit of a joker.  It doesn’t tell you the severity of an injury or indicate the level of tissue damage that may have occurred.   It doesn’t even reliably tell you where the problem is located.

As a Sports Massage Therapist, I sometimes encounter patients who are in so much pain that, at first, I can barely touch them.  When they arrive for treatment, they can’t take their shoes off, they can’t get undressed, they can’t lie down on the plinth.  In these cases, I’m often something of a last resort.  They’ve been to their GP, they’ve been for a scan but nothing significant has been found to be wrong.

Sports Massage in the Reduction of Central Sensitization

To over-simplify slightly, the problem is that the patient’s brain has got involved.  In one sense, all pain exists in the brain only, but that’s not to say that pain is imaginary.  Quite the reverse.  All that’s happening is that a few nerve cells are sending impulses to your brain.  It’s your brain that then interprets those signals and it interprets them as pain.  The problem is that your brain processes a lot of other things that can amplify pain.  Most of our negative emotions do this: fear, anxiety, grief, depression, stress.  In turn, increased pain levels can cause fear and anxiety.  Suddenly you have a spiral of pain and negative emotion.

It used to be thought that central sensitisation was time dependent. The longer you were in pain, the more likely it was that your pain would become centralised.  It was even quantified and any pain that had been hanging around for 6 weeks or more was likely to be disproportionate to the level of damage.

But the more we appreciate that the conscious and unconscious parts of the brain are nevertheless part of the same brain, the more we can understand that an anxious person is likely to be a person who is more sensitive to pain.  They are already at the top of the spiral.

Simple touch can help break that spiral.  Often there’s no need for clever techniques.  No myofascial release, no muscle energy stretches.  Just physical contact to reassure your patient that they can relax, that they can allow themselves to move.

Here are some great resources to help explore some of these ideas:

David S Butler and G Lorimer Moseley (2013): “Explain Pain”, Noigroup Publications  www.instituteforchronicpain.org

An Outline of Healing from Vaccine Damage – ADHD, AUTISM, ‘Auto-Immune Conditions’, Neurological Problems

Over the last few years the evidence has mounted that vaccination against diseases comes at a price.  The chemical cocktail contained in vaccines is implicated in multiple immediate and slowly developing ailments, the evidence is freely available on the internet though the mainstream media refuses to report in it and mainstream medicine’s eye is neatly misdirected by Big Pharma. This discussion assumes that the reader is acquainted with the notion that vaccines do cause harm and that the benefits may be very limited.

Stephen MacAllan

Healing from vaccine damage is not a simple or easy process.  It can be done. With patience and persistence and some research. There are multiple possible factors and all of them have to be addressed. The digestive system always seems to be affected and commonly there are allergies, intolerances and bowel function disturbance. The digestion and nutrition is the place to start and an allergy test can point you in the right direction. The grains, especially wheat are the most likely problem and dairy produce comes a close second but any foods can be a problem. Yeast (usually candida) overgrowth is almost always an issue – probiotics and yeast killers will need to be used. Even if yeast/candida is not an issue there will be moderate to severe dysbiosis. Nutrition should be the best quality obtainable, everything cooked from fresh and raw with good quality ingredients and as much variety as possible, bearing in mind allergies and intolerances. Bone broth makes a great basis. Raw fooding is good but difficult with little people.

The chemical toxic load will include a mixed bag of chemicals, pharmaceuticals and metals such as mercury and aluminium so, on-going exposure must be eliminated and detoxing regimes initiated. Detoxing regimes include:  herbs and supplements – Vit C, glutathione, Burdock are examples of some of those multiple options. Saunas, especially far-infra red and sweating generally, including induced by exercise are useful general metals detoxers.  Epsom salt baths, enemas, colonic hydrotherapy even, if appropriate.

My researches suggest that sometimes, perhaps always, vaccines cause DNA/RNA damage and this is more difficult to resolve – energy medicines, homoeopathy, bio-resonance, orgone and the like seem to be effective.

The research that I have done coupled with my own experience of helping vaccine damaged children and I conclude that there is surprisingly limited science that truly supports any benefits to vaccination. The epidemiology that the mainstream presents glosses over the fact that the frequency of many diseases was very much reduced, by hygiene measures and better nutrition, before the vaccines were introduced.

The nail in the coffin of the vaccine case is that long-established and indisputable science informs us that babies have zero capacity to produce antibodies until they are about 6 months old and so it is beyond dispute that any vaccines earlier than that offer zero benefit and, considering the various toxic substances in every vaccine, may only cause harm.

No Time or ‘Surplus Energy’ For Exercise? The Irony Of Our Instinct To Conserve Energy

Recent research has shown the remarkable difference that exercise makes to the heart and muscular health of 75-year olds who have been exercising regularly in their earlier years. Scott Trappe, the lead researcher, explained how surprised they were by the results: “We saw that people who exercise regularly year after year have better overall health than their sedentary counterparts. These 75-year-olds – men and women – have similar cardiovascular health to a 40- to 45-year-old.”

No Time or ‘Surplus Energy’ For Exercise? The Irony Of Our Instinct To Conserve Energy

The study also found that people in their 70s who had been exercising regularly during their adult life had muscle health that was virtually the same as the muscles of people in their 20s:

50+ years of aerobic exercise fully preserved capillarization and aerobic enzymes, regardless of intensity. These data suggest that skeletal muscle metabolic fitness may be easier to maintain with lifelong aerobic exercise than more central aspects of the cardiovascular system.

With this and so many other studies showing the huge benefits of exercising regularly, why does the couch-potato lifestyle persist? Could it simply be that busy schedules lead to the feeling that we lack the energy to make the obvious healthy choices? The irony is that researchers have also found overwhelming evidence that “regular exercise plays a significant role in increasing energy levels and reducing fatigue.”

One attractive solution to this conundrum: Whole Body Vibration Training (WBV) accelerates the effects of many simple exercise routines so emphatically that a 10-minute session amplifies many-fold the results you could expect without the vibration aspect. The FlexxiCore Challenger was designed to make WBV more accessible and enjoyable for the hard-pressed individual who might struggle with the thought of a regular gym-based work-out regime; a roll-away platform that combines oscillation with vibration.

Tracey McAlpine, editor of Fighting Fifty - which advises on ways to age positively and live life after 50 to the full - recently tested the FlexxiCore Challenger. This was her verdict:

There is something slightly addictive about the FlexxiCore Challenger.  By week four I was really looking forward to using the equipment daily.  My mood and sleeping patterns were greatly improved, my balance was so much better and my muscle tone impressive, especially considering I hadn’t been near a gym or got back into running.  Discomfort in my knee had practically disappeared, so I upped my game, I started ‘working out’ on the FlexxiCore Challenger.  I introduced hand weights and made sure to do squats and stretches while on the equipment.  My body definitely was wobbling much less than it did when I started the trial, it was changing shape and looking well-toned.  My feet even improved, I had more movement in my toes.  My productivity levels were increased, and I had far more flexibility.”

Tracey’s Full Report is here.

HydroTabs: Harnessing the Power of Molecular Hydrogen

At Water for Health we have long been intrigued by the therapeutic potential of molecular hydrogen (H2). Having followed the work of the Molecular Hydrogen Institute (formerly the Molecular Hydrogen Foundation) for a number of years, we have continually been fascinated by the clinical research into this powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compound, which has been variously shown to improve athletic performance, reduce inflammation and offer significant benefits to those afflicted by rheumatoid arthritis.

HydroTabs: Harnessing the Power of Molecular Hydrogen

Indeed, molecular hydrogen’s potential for preventive and therapeutic applications in over 170 human and animal disease models has been validated by 1,000+ peer-reviewed articles, including 40 human studies. And this is to say nothing of the anecdotal evidence, which is considerable.

It is believed that much of the benefit of consuming H2 stems from its ability to rapidly diffuse into cells and tissues without disturbing metabolic reactions or affecting signaling ROS. The smallest bioavailable molecule in the universe, molecular hydrogen is formed when two hydrogen atoms combine. It is so tiny, it has no trouble penetrating the blood-brain barrier.

In any case, the promising evidence for molecular hydrogen compelled us to offer water enhancement products which contained dissolved hydrogen gas. As such, you can obtain hydrogen-rich water from several of our bioceramic filters including the Biocera Alkaline Jug, the Energy Plus Undersink Water Filter and the Biocera AHA Bottle.

Recently, however, we have introduced a brand-new product which offers a considerably higher concentration of molecular hydrogen. While the aforementioned filters stimulated something in the region of 150 or 250 parts-per-billion (PPB), the HydroTab has the capacity to stimulate 10 parts-per-million (PPM) in every glass. Simply drop a HydroTab into a glass and wait until it fully dissolves into millions of nano H2 bubbles – then drink immediately for maximum effect.

You might be wondering if regular tap or bottled water contains molecular hydrogen. The truth is that we have not detected any. Water does not contain dissolved hydrogen gas, as standard.

We are excited to bring HydroTab to our customers, as no other product on the market can match this concentration of molecular hydrogen. What’s more, the hydrogen-enriched water is ready to drink in under two minutes. Composed from a proprietary blend of pure magnesium and malic acid, HydroTab is available in tubs of 30 or 60 tablets.

HydroTab puts the power of molecular hydrogen in your pocket.

BestCare Energy & Vitality - Uberfood™ - Truly a Superfood

BestCare Energy & Vitality trading as PAC Corporate Ltd  introduced their Uberfood™ under their key brand MicrOrganics. When one thinks superfood, one thinks horrible taste, right? With Uberfood™ the focus has been to bring the best nutrient spectrum that is palatable without the use of sweeteners, sugars or other unnecessary ingredients.

Uberfood

Uberfood™ is 100% organic and vegan.  It boasts some of nature’s finest sources of plant based protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and other micronutrients. The product contains a nutritional blend of no less than 11 key ingredients all carefully balanced for taste and nutrition. Here are some of the key ingredients:

  • Organic Spirulina: It has been suggested Spirulina could overcome the world’s food crisis; it isn’t hard to see why. The nutrient profile of spirulina is something to behold. Despite being tiny little blue-green algae, Spirulina contains between 50- 60% complete and digestible protein. A mere 3 grams of spirulina could provide as much antioxidant nutrients as up to 5 servings of vegetables (but you should still eat your veggies!).
  • Organic Chlorella: Its 58% protein content isn’t the only bonus; Chlorella is also a healthy vegan source of Iron and B12. The mineral content of Chlorella means it can help detoxify the body naturally.
  • Organic Wheatgrass: This gluten-free young grass packs a mineral punch. Alongside magnesium, calcium and selenium, to name a few, it also contains electrolytes and is a great source of antioxidant rich chlorophyll.
  • Organic Barley Grass: Barley Grass is high in iron and protein, is a source of B vitamins and minerals and contains enzymes. As a young grass, barley grass resembles a vegetable in terms of nutritional make up more than a grain. Its ability to absorb nutrients from the soil is at its peak and all the nutrients are stored in the grass as it prepares to grow its grain shoots.
  • Organic Lucuma: This traditional South American fruit has been discovered to be packed full of minerals and vitamins. We use the whole pulp powder, not just the juice powder, to bring you all of its fibrous goodness.
  • Organic Turmeric: Its main active ingredient, Curcumin, is thought to have anti-inflammatory properties and is rich in antioxidants.
  • Organic Goji Berry: Gram for gram this berry contains hundreds of times more vitamin C than oranges. They are also rich in iron and antioxidants compared to other fruits and vegetables.

Ozone Therapy in Bedford – Munro Hall Clinic Holistic Dentistry

As you might have read in previous articles about Ozone, this gas which is prevalent in nature, similar to Oxygen (having 2 atoms), Ozone is comprised of 3 oxygen atoms, and has led to a subterranean revolution within the field of dentistry.

It has been used for many years at our dental clinic in conjunction with surgical cleaning of anaerobic infections of the jaw, before it gained all the wider attention across dentistry that it has at present.

Ozone Therapy in Bedford – Munro Hall Clinic Holistic Dentistry

By killing infections (usually 99% of micro-organisms within 10 seconds), it begs the question why antibiotics would be needed, even after the most invasive jaw surgeries.

As the love of this gas has grown popular for obvious reason, other applications within dentistry have been successfully adopted.

For instance, early tooth decay can be reversed, and quickly heal after a course of Ozone gas exposure to the affected tooth surface. The Ozone is delivered through a small suction cup over the decayed tooth area, or sometimes over a deep cavity that has just been drilled, to act as a final anti-microbial zap. This is particularly beneficial as deep cavities can lead to the death of a tooth due to bacterial leakage to the inside of the same tooth itself, and in the bone surrounding that tooth.

It is known that established gum disease allows anaerobic bacteria to over grow, but this can now be successfully treated with exposure to ozone gas being pressed into the affected deep gum areas, which quickly kills these deeply seated bacteria as they can’t tolerate oxygen within their proximity, but they also lack anti-oxidants within their cell walls to fight the oxidant Ozone.

Interestingly, the close anatomical connections of the ear, nose, throat and the maxillary sinuses have led us to the use of nasal and ear insufflations. Not only is this a nice and relaxing closure to the dental intervention, but this application has shown good results on relatively vague symptoms such as itchy ears, lymphatic drainage of infections, as well as sinus congestion relief.

Sports Injuries - A Self-Help Guide, Third Edition

by Vivian Grisogono

Published by Lotus Publishing. 2019. Paperback. £14.99. ISBN: 978 1 905367 90 0.

Vivian Grisogono passes on years of experience as a sports participant and physiotherapist, making this book, now completely updated, the most effective guide to coping with injuries and getting back to sport. Indispensable reading for not only sportsmen and women of all types and ages, but also to coaches, PE teachers, and medical and paramedical practitioners interested in sports injuries.

Cover Sports Injuries

Injuries are described ‘geographically’, from foot to neck, and then down the arm. The causes of injury are explained, to help you understand how and why a particular injury occurs, whether it’s a sudden traumatic injury like the sprinter's hamstring tear or the squash player's Achilles tendon rupture, or a gradual overuse injury like tennis elbow or runner's shin soreness. Self-diagnosis is extremely difficult, and this book aims to help the reader to identify the possible causes of pain, in order to present a clear picture of the problem to a medical practitioner, so that they can make a speedy and accurate diagnosis. The first-aid and immediate self-help measures you should take for any injury, before you manage to see a medical practitioner, are described.

Following diagnosis, rehabilitation principles for each injury are given, from the very early stages of recovery, through to your return to sport. For tendon and muscle injuries, the progression starts with passive stretching for flexibility, then you re-strengthen the injured muscle group, until the final stage when you work the muscles in co-ordination with the surrounding muscles. For joint injuries, you have to regain stability through strengthening exercises, then gradually mobilize the injured joint, before moving into the final phase of co-ordinating exercises. All the specific exercises for achieving these aspects of recovery are illustrated in detail, for each injury throughout the body.

About the Author

Vivian Grisogono has been a practising physiotherapist since 1976. Now residing on the beautiful island of Hvar off the coast of Croatia, she passes on her considerable knowledge via her website, viviangrisogono.com. The first edition of this best-selling classic was first published by John Murray, and sold in excess of 100,000 copies.

Bioregulatory Medicine - An Integrative Holistic Approach to Self-Healing

by Dr Dickson Thom DDS ND Dr James Paul Maffitt Odell OMD ND L.Ac. Dr Jeoffrey Drobot NMD, Dr Frank Pleus MD DDS OMFS Jess Higgins Kelley MNT

Published by Chelsea Green Publishing. 2018. Paperback.  £14.99/ $17.00. ISBN 1603588213

Bioregulatory medicine is a cutting edge and innovative medical model. What you will learn in this book is that repairing and restoring our body’s natural biological processes is the only way to reverse and correct the deepest roots of disease patterns.

Cover Bioregulatory Medicine

Over half of the world’s population is afflicted with some form of chronic or degenerative illness. Heart disease, autoimmune disease, diabetes, neurological conditions, cancer, Lyme disease – the list goes on. The conventional, allopathic, treat-the-symptom-with-pharmaceutical-drugs model is rapidly falling out of favour as patients are searching for nontoxic, advanced prevention and healing modalities that actually work. Bioregulatory Medicine introduces a model that has proven effective for decades in other more forward-thinking developed countries, including Switzerland and Germany.

Our bodies have many bio-regulating systems, including the cardiovascular, digestive, neurological, respiratory, endocrine, and so on. Bioregulatory medicine is a comprehensive and holistic approach to health that advocates the use of natural healing methods to support and restore the body’s intrinsic self-regulating and self-healing mechanisms, as opposed to simply treating symptoms with integrative therapies. Bioregulatory medicine is about discovering the root cause of disease and takes into account the entire person from a genetic, epigenetic, metabolic, energetic, and emotional point of view. So, while patients may have the same disease or prognosis, the manifestation of illness is entirely bio-individual and must be treated and prevented on an individual level.

Bioregulatory Medicine addresses the four pillars of health – drainage and detox, diet, mind-body medicine, and oral health – using a sophisticated synthesis of the very best natural medicine with modern advances in technology. In addition to identifying the cause of disease, bio-regulatory medicine promotes disease prevention and early intervention of illness through non-invasive diagnostics and treatments, and incorporates the use of over 100 different non-toxic diagnostics and treatments from around the world.

Forward-thinking patients and integrative practitioners will find Bioregulatory Medicine invaluable as they seek to deepen their understanding of the body’s many regulating systems and innate ability to heal itself.

The Bioregulatory Medicine Institute is a non-profit programme of the Marion Institute, founded to promote the science and art of biological regulatory medicine, and to increase public knowledge and integration of bio-regulatory medicine as a wholistic and evidence-based medical system.
