Endorphin Effect - Mind-Body Health and Wellbeing
17/18 September 2011, London.

This seminal training teaches the core strategies of effective and accessible mind-body healthcare and self-management. It combines the essence of the traditional eastern and holistic approaches mindfulness and body awareness - with the insights of modern psychology and neuroscience, as described in Williams book The Endorphin Effect.

Mountain Peak - the Endorphin Effect

Over the weekend you will learn and experience techniques that can improve your physical and psychological health. In particular, you will learn how to produce endorphins, the hormones that relax tissue, remove pain, and create the physical sensations of wellbeing. When you feel good, they can make you feel even better. This weekend gives you the precise concepts and techniques for achieving this:

  • Positive Triggers - Audit and use the thoughts and activities that trigger endorphins;
  • Inner Smile - The most important mind-body attitude of all for sustained good health;
  • Curled Deer - Regenerate and relax in any situation through this strategy, which is also the key to a sustained strong centre and hara;
  • Biophylia/Connection - Utilize the body's connection with the natural world to absorb vitality whenever you want.

Benefits

  • Physical - Releases tension, relaxes tissue, allowing a free flow of the body's circulatory systems, enabling sustained good health and specific healing;
  • Psychological and Emotional - Empowers and encourages. People discover they can influence their own chemistry and mood but with no drugs or dependency. Also provides an effective method for holding pain and distress;
  • Leadership and Caring - Provides the foundation and fuel for genuinely feeling positive, benevolent and strong. Burnout decreased; bedside manner improved;
  • Holistic - Melts bioenergetic tension, enabling the flow and absorption of natural vitality, known in the East as chi and prana - in holistic medicine, the foundation of good health;
  • Spiritual - The Endorphin Effect, described as spiritual intelligence in practice, provides benefits similar to those of meditation, yoga, tai chi and qi gung: increased mental focus, clarity of consciousness, calm and flexibility.

Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice AFMCP-UK

Oct 3 – 7 2011 - London

Approved by The Institute for Functional Medicine and the University of Westminster as prior learning for the MSc Nutritional Therapy

AFMCP

The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) and the University of Westminster, London have agreed that attendance at 'Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice' - being presented in London in October 2011 by the IFM in conjunction with Nutri-Link Ltd - plus completion of an additional assessment, will enable delegates to apply for accreditation of prior learning (APL) to gain credits towards the new MSc Nutritional Therapy award starting at the University of Westminster in September 2011.  This agreement offers great savings in time and costs for delegates thinking of validating their studies through an MSc award.

A delegate who completes the 5-day AFMCP-UK programme plus an additional assessment to demonstrate how they have applied their learning from the programme to their clinical practice, can apply for accreditation of prior learning (APL) to gain 40 credits towards the MSc Nutritional Therapy offered by the University of Westminster, London.  Credits would be set against the Functional Medicine in Nutritional Therapy Practice module in the MSc programme.

The assessment will be a clinical case report written to guidelines set by the University of Westminster in conjunction with The Institute for Functional Medicine, and will be very similar to the assessment in the standard MSc module.  A delegate's work would be assessed by the MSc Faculty at the University of Westminster using published marking criteria for accreditation of prior learning and the award of credits.  The University of Westminster would charge the delegate £290 (2011-2012 academic year) for completing the APL process, payable directly to the University.

The Active Honey Co Rainforest Honey from Chile

From Chile, The Active Honey Co Rainforest Honey has a delicious, flavour with the aromatic taste of aniseed, jasmine, vanilla and cloves, combined with a hint of caramel and toffee. It’s excellent for your health as well.

Rainforst Honey

Chilean honey possesses natural antimicrobial properties – antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antiseptic – which protect our  health in many ways.  Unique to The Active Honey Co Rainforest Honey is a special property:  it includes Active H2O2NEY™, a patented process that enables the potent constituents of Chilean honey to become active only when exposed to the skin or taken internally.  These powerful ingredients are then gradually released to provide us with its health-enhancing properties over a sustained period.

Scientists at the Department of Applied Science at The Institute of Technology Sligo have found that by careful management of the bees, how the honey in harvested and then processed, they can guarantee the activity and antimicrobial potency of Active H2O2NEY, with pharmaceutical grade accuracy.  Active H2O2NEY can kill particularly virulent bugs such as MRSA and E Coli, on which antibiotics and conventional antiseptics are failing to have an effect.

The Active Honey Co range also includes sterilised Antiseptic Honey 20+  for use on the skin, including dry skin conditions, cuts and grazes, rashes, minor burns, sunburn,  as well as antimicrobial benefits.

Rainforest Honey is taken from untreated hives that are free from pesticides and located in the unpolluted, unpopulated forests of southern Chile.  The rainforests are not affected by the harvesting of Rainforest Honey.  The Active Honey Co Rainforest Honey range is suitable for both internal and external use and for vegetarians.

College of Naturopathic Medicine (CNM):  Nutritional Therapy and Naturopathic Nutrition

CNM Logo

The College of Naturopathic Medicine (CNM), with colleges across the UK, train students for a career in Nutritional Therapy by studying for a diploma in Naturopathic Nutrition.  Naturopathy is a healthcare philosophy based on the healing power of nature; the body has the innate intelligence and ability to heal itself if given the right conditions.

The Naturopathic approach taken in our Nutrition training emphasizes the use of whole, organic, naturally produced foods as medicine to address toxicity or deficiency. Teaching is evidence-based with expert lecturers. Students get plenty of clinical practice, first as observers then when they are advanced students, then as practitioners working under the supervision of qualified professionals.

The course starts with biomedicine studies for students who are new to health, followed by two years of part time study in Naturopathic Nutrition. Study is on fixed weekends at CNM colleges in London, Brighton, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh, with a weekday option also available at CNM in London.

The Path of Synchronicity: Align Yourself with Your Life’s Flow

by Dr Allan G Hunter.

Published by Findhorn Press. 2011. Softback. £9.99. ISBN: 978-1-84409-539-1.

The Path of Synchronicity

We’ve all experienced them, those moments when things seem to go exactly right, when it feels like the stars are aligned miraculously, the perfect person or thing shows up to save the situation. We call it luck, karma or coincidence and we often attribute it to our ‘Guardian Angel, God, A Guiding Hand or the mysterious workings of the Universe.’ But what is it really? Is it just fate? In The Path of Synchronicity: Align Yourself with Your Life’s Flow Dr Allan G. Hunter leads us on a trail of discovery revealing new information about those uncanny events in our lives.

Dr Hunter presents an erudite and insightful examination of the anecdotal stories of good luck and pure chance and the profound effect of the ego and the ‘shadow’ on our choices. What’s new here is that Hunter demonstrates how to recognize the underlying patterns in these events and our choices. By demonstrating the importance of paying attention and asking the right questions, he shows the reader how to move into the ‘flow’ of synchronicity and harness it to improve their lives.

An Oxford graduate, therapist and professor of literature, Dr Hunter employs his deep understanding of myth and classic literature, as well as examples from real life situations to illustrate the points he is making and it makes for an entertaining and informative reading experience. In particular, Hunter’s chapters on the barriers to the flow are fascinating, including ones that deal with friends, family and illnesses.

Hunter’s gift is the clarity and compassion with which he writes and he has produced a book for those who feel they have fallen off course out of the ‘flow’ or can no longer feel the ‘energy’ we know is there to guide them. The Path of Synchronicity is also for those who want to know more about the mysterious workings of life’s forces and how to use what comes to them, no matter what the channel, for their highest good.

2000 Homeopaths Celebrate the School of Homeopathy’s 30th Birthday!

chool of Homeopathy Event Guests Celebrate

The School of Homeopathy held an historic event in Stroud to celebrate their 30th Anniversary. Over the first weekend of July the School hosted a seminar, private party and online event at Hawkwood College in Stroud. Most of the UK’s main homeopathic organisations were represented, along with homeopaths and alternative practitioners from China, Japan, America, Canada, India and Europe. Many of the world’s leading homeopaths came to show support and give presentations and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales sent his warmest congratulations:

“I did just want to send my warmest possible congratulations in celebration of the Stroud School of Homeopathy’s 30th Anniversary. It seems to me this most noteworthy of events takes on an even greater resonance, coming as it does at a time when, sadly, we have been witnessing the relative decline of some homeopathic services in different parts of the United Kingdom.

“It makes the achievements of the School even more significant – from being one of the first in this country to offer an on-site, four year programme, to developing an extensive clinical supervision process and, in addition, creating a home-study programme which reaches students in over sixty countries.

“It seems remarkable all this has happened in spite of the apparently ceaseless attacks on homeopathy, and on the individuals attempting to build credibility around its patient outcomes, and I can only wish you every possible success in the years to come.”

The School (the longest running in the UK) was founded in 1981 and was one of the first to offer an on-site four year programme. It has worked closely with the Society of Homeopaths during a long development towards an accreditation process. The School moved from its original home in Devon to Hawkwood College in Stroud two years ago.

New Therapy Centre for Humber Cancer Patients

The Odyssey Cancer Caring Centre at Barton upon Humber has provided a range of free complementary therapies for hundreds of cancer patients and their carers for 14 years. But the unique project, mostly funded by profits from a nearby country hotel, has outgrown its current premises. Plans have been drawn up for an ecologically built centre to encourage patients’ recovery and with as little impact as possible on the tranquil setting. A £3 million fund-raising appeal is launched to build the new centre which will provide  improved services.

Ricahrd, Tom and Daisy

(left to right) Richard Morgan, Tom Hazeldine and Daisa Morgan at the site of the new centre

Daisa Morgan, husband Richard, and Tom Hazeldine set up the Odyssey Centre in 1997, prompted by Daisa’s frustration about the limited support available when she cared for her mum Margaret Harrison, who sadly died in 1982 from Mesathelioma, a rare form of lung cancer.

After three years in a small cottage near the hotel, the centre moved to Nightingale House.  Since then more than 500 clients with various types of cancer have benefited from natural therapies; additionally, almost 300 carers have also used the centre’s services.  The centre has provided a total of 17,000 treatments since it opened, offering complementary therapies including aromatherapy, body massage, reflexology, visualisation techniques and Reiki.

The existing centre consists of three therapy rooms and a lounge. Facilities planned for the new building include ten therapy rooms, a children’s area, small café and shop selling local produce and a library with IT facilities. The project will enable expansion of support and ‘drop-in’ services and additional therapies such as art and music therapies, acupuncture and Pilates, and a treatment room for doctors, nurses and other medical staff.

Subject to approval, building work is expected to start later this year and be completed before the end of 2012 A series of fund-raising events are planned; the charity wants to hear from anyone who can help.

    Advice for Foot Pain

    Plantar Fasciitis is a common problem affecting the plantar fascia – a band of connective tissue similar to a ligament that stretches from heel to the base of the toes and acts as a support for the arch of the foot. Pain occurs when the area becomes inflamed through injury of conversely, under use. Louise Carruthers of Bury Osteopaths is keen to stress that there are easy and sensible measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of developing this condition which although highly treatable can be very painful and awkward for the sufferer. The condition is more likely to be a problem with people aged between 40-60, more likely to occur in woman and athletes.

    Stem Cell Therapy Update

    Stem cell therapy holds great promise for the treatment of diabetes, but medical and ethical considerations have prevented its practical application. Now a Tel Aviv University researcher has found a promising new direction in the ‘memories’ of adult stem cells. Prof Shimon Efrat of TAU’s Sackler Faculty of Medicine has derived embryonic-like stem cells from adult stem cells that appear to retain their effectiveness in producing insulin in the human body. His research, recently published in Cell Stem Cell, may promise a new avenue of treatment that avoids costly and dangerous pancreas transplants.

    Pine Bark Naturally Improves Heart Function

    New published research reveals the natural supplement Pycnogenol® taken with CoQ10 improves heart rate, blood volume output, physical fitness, blood pressure as well as heart and respiratory rate. Pycnogenol® is an antioxidant plant extract from the bark of the French maritime pine tree, widely available in UK health food shops and clinically proven to improve endothelial function and blood flow. A study in the journal Panminerva Medica reveals that the natural supplements Pycnogenol® and Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) taken together by stable heart failure patients naturally strengthens the heart, increasing the blood volume ejected with each beat. As a consequence, the oxygen-rich blood supply to the organs improves and patients become more physically energetic.

    Why Goal Setting Can Ruin Your Life

    According to Sarah Alexander, expert in intuition and the author of Spiritual Intelligence: The Eight Pillars of 21st Century Business Success, goal setting can ruin you life. Goals are often set in the hope that life will be better with the attainment of a certain goal. Yet the realization soon comes that even with their chosen acquisition or achievement we are no happier or fulfilled. Another problem with using goals to make us feel better is that we often create for ourselves things that are not really right for us as an individual and that are not really in alignment with who we are as a person. Sarah’s book is available from Amazon and other good book retailers.
