Iran's supreme leader has for the first time publicly acknowledged that thousands of people were killed, during recent protests. A violent response to the unrest has claimed 3,090 lives, according to US-based Iranian Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), with some activist groups putting the death toll far higher. An internet blackout has made it extremely difficult to get clear information.

The announcement of phase two of President Donald Trump's peace plan for Gaza would seem like progress.  Trump's Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff and the president's son-in-law Jared Kushner will also sit on the "founding executive board", the White House said in a statement, external on Friday. The Trump administration has named US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and former UK prime minister Sir Tony Blair as two of the founding members of its "Board of Peace" for Gaza.

Barely 48 hours after US forces took Nicolás Maduro and his wife from a compound in Caracas, the Venezuelan leader stood in a New York court and pleaded not guilty to conspiracy charges brought by the US government. As the world grapples with the highly unusual military seizure by the US of another world leader, the criminal case against Maduro will work through the justice system much like any other filed in New York, based upon the evidence and US law.

There is scarcely a place in Ukraine that has not been targeted since Russia launched its full-scale invasion nearly four years ago. But in recent weeks Odesa – Ukraine's third largest city – has come under sustained attack. Through strikes on port and energy infrastructure, Russia is trying to cripple the region's economy and dent the population's morale.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to place tariffs on nations that do not go along with his ambitions to annex Greenland. Trump said at a White House meeting that he "may put a tariff on countries if they don't go along with Greenland", which is a self-governing territory controlled by Denmark.

Taking paracetamol while pregnant is safe and there's no evidence it raises the risk of autism, ADHD and developmental issues in children, say experts behind a major new review.

Here are a number of authoritative sites with a non-mainstream take on health news:

The Alliance for Natural Health: Rob Verkerk PhD takes a close look at the latest shifts in federal dietary guidance and what they really may mean for natural health, processed food influence, and public trust in nutrition policy;  How energy drinks are rewriting youth behaviour  As consumption among kids skyrockets, ANH expose the health, sleep and behavioural harms behind the caffeine craze and why this matters for families everywhere.

Dr Sircus shares how he reversed diabetes, normalized blood sugar, and treated serious vascular disease naturally — without statins, stents, or surgery. He begins by recounting how, five years ago, he was diagnosed as diabetic after routine blood work. Within two weeks of intensive magnesium therapy, the diagnosis was gone.

Noel Watson posted about Metformin & Cancer. For over 60 years, metformin has been prescribed for type 2 diabetes. But in the last 15 years, it has become one of the most heavily studied metabolic therapies in oncology – with over 300 scientific papers published every year. Metformin targets fundamental hallmarks of cancer biology that almost all tumours share. This overview explains how it works, why it matters, and why researchers consider it one of the most promising repurposed medicines in modern cancer care.
