Abstract

RAUTALAHTI and colleagues, National Public Health Institute, Helsinki Finland. matti.rautalahti@ktl.fi writes that the results of the Alpha-Tocopherol Beta-Carotene (ATBC) study, the first large intervention trial with antioxidants were intriguing. The author writes that while the possibility that beta-carotene may in certain circumstances enhance carcinogenesis has been confirmed in another large trial, the mechanisms of action remain obscure.
