Abstract

LI and colleagues, Institute of Botany, Jiangsu Province and Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing, China, have reviewed (221 references) the natural medicines used in traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of diabetes mellitus. Abstract: The prevalence of diabetes mellitus is rapidly increasing, and the condition is becoming a serious threat to the health of people worldwide. It has also never been reported (to the authors' knowledge) that someone has recovered completely from the disease. In addition to drug therapy, it seems worthwhile to pay close attention to the wide range of herbal medicines available in traditional Chinese medicine for diabetes. Based on a large body of chemical and pharmacological research, numerous bioactive compounds have been found in Chinese herbal medicines. This paper reviews 86 natural medicines with regards to their origin, anti-diabetic active principles and pharmacological test results, which are commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine and have been shown experimentally and/or clinically to be active against diabetes mellitus. Of these medicines, 82 originate from plants and 4 from animals, and they cover 45 families. These results augur well for the future regarding the treatment of diabetes with traditional Chinese medicine.
