Abstract
GORDON and co-workers, Memorial Hospital of Union County, Marysville, OH 43043, USA, have studied a mechanical massage technique in fibromyalgia.
Background
The aim of this study was to investigate how a mechanical massage technique (LPG technique) could contribute to the treatment of fibromyalgia.
Methodology
In this feasibility study, 10 women with a pre-existing diagnosis of fibromyalgia were enrolled. They received a total of 15 sessions of mechanical massage administered by a physical therapist once a week. The Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire and a physical examination scoring tender points were the main outcome measures. Evaluations were conducted at the screening visit, after 7 sessions, and after completion of 15 sessions.
Results
Most of the parameters (pain intensity, physical function, number of tender points) showed a significant improvement at the end of treatment compared with baseline.
Conclusion
The studied intervention might be associated with positive outcomes in women with fibromyalgia. There is a need for a controlled clinical trial.
