The Complete Guide: Taking care of your mental well-being before and during your wedding A wedding is an exciting event, but there can also be some stress in the run-up to the big day, as well as when it arrives. This guide will help engaged people deal with their feelings and pre-wedding anxieties, while helping them take care of themselves during this important life change. What is mental well-being? Mental well-being doesn’t have one official definition. However, Lexico defines well-being as “the state of being comfortable, healthy, or happy” and it is closely linked to mental health. The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines mental health as “a state of well-being in which an individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” The charity Mind notes that good mental wellbeing doesn’t mean you’re always happy, or unaffected by the things you experience. But you are better equipped to deal with any stressors life throws your way.

What Are the Types of Mental Health Disorders? Learn more about the different types of mental health disorders present in the population today and how to pursue treatment successfully. Why is Mental Wellness Important? Mental health disorders affect how a person feels, thinks, and behaves. They can be chronic (long-lasting), short-lived, or cyclical. Experiencing problems with mental health is more common than most people realize. According to the Centers for Disease Control, mental illnesses are among the most diagnosed health problems in the U.S. How Common Are Mental Health Disorders? Over half of all Americans will be diagnosed with a mental health disorder during their lifetime. Coping with mental health issues is challenging enough for adults. Sadly, it’s estimated that one in five children will experience serious mental health issues before reaching adulthood. It’s important to remember that mental health isn’t static; it can change over time. Mental health can be impacted during extreme stress and improve when those stressors are removed or when the person learns new coping skills. Even if they don’t seem that critical, mental health problems should not be ignored. One reason for this is that mental health affects physical health and vice versa. For example, people with untreated depression are at greater risk of developing chronic conditions like diabetes or heart disease than those without depression.

The LGBTQ+ community experiences substance use disorder and mental illness rates significantly higher than the general population, and most never receive treatment. No one cause creates this disparity, but most researchers agree that the unique challenges that LGBTQ+ people experience can contribute significantly to substance use. Fortunately, there’s hope with LGBTQ+ addiction treatment centers, which can offer significantly greater chances of recovery for LGBTQ+ people compared to treatment as usual. If you know, you know. But members outside the community often wonder, “What does LGBTQ+ stand for?” Put simply, LGBTQ+ is an umbrella term for people who don’t identify as heterosexual or identify with their assigned gender at birth.
