from left - Josh, Joe, David and Annie Balen

Managing Director, David Balen, moved the company from London to Malvern in the early 1990’s where he also shifted the business to focus on pioneering policies for Health and Well-being Professionals with a philosophy to offer unique, wide ranging specially designed wordings at competitive premiums.  Scroll forward 20 years and today Balens are growing from strength to strength.  Operating from purpose built offices at the foot of the Malvern Hills; a team of over 40 staff look after a wide range of clients and their businesses.

Balens has invested heavily in IT since the early 1980s which allows them to deliver an excellent personal service for a very large client base.  Keeping up the times, the system allows those that want 24/7 delivery and don’t need personal advice, to transact online or pay by electronic telephone payment system.  Corporate clients receive regular visits, revisions and a much more personal service.

Joe Balen, David’s eldest son, was made a director of Balens in 2011 and heads up the largest sector of the business, the Affinity Schemes department, which looks after individuals and associations, whilst David’s second son Josh is in charge of the commercial arm that also includes Balens ever growing European department.  The commercial side of Balens has developed greatly over the last few years, with the company able to quote for businesses as wide ranging as Spas, Salons and Gyms, Products Manufacturers, Schools and Educational Establishments, Charities and Home Insurance among others.

The most recent addition to the Balen family team is David’s daughter, Annie. A qualified Occupational Therapist, Annie decided to join the family business in 2011 and is currently re-training to become an Independent Financial Adviser.  She is working in Balens sister company H&L Balen and Co, which offers Holistic financial planning, including income protection (increasingly important for the self-employed), mortgages, life and critical illness cover, pensions and investments.

But Balens is not a business that is focused purely on profit – Education is a key cornerstone of what the company is about.  David Balen regularly lectures and writes articles on a wide range of insurance and practice management issues, many of which are available on Balens website, and this year they will be holding their second CPD Training event, at the Holistic Health Show, NEC in May.

Balens are also shortly launching the Balens Charitable Trust- a vehicle for giving back to the Natural Medicine and Wellbeing Sector that has meant so much in helping David personally over the years and of course which has contributed so much to the success of Balens as a Company.

The European College of K-Practic

Simple and Safe non-manipulation techniques for all health professionals.

All the main techniques you need to get started are on our K-PRACTIC 1.01 DVD COURSE.

European College of K-Practic

For details, click here: www.pekana.co.uk/stream/index.html

Special Price until August 30, 2013  is €150 plus postage.

You can order it through   http://pekana.co.uk/k-practic/

or just by simple email. You can also arrange personal hands-on training at ECKP College in Dublin, on application.

Basically you’ll be able to do all a chiropractor can do, and more:

  1. A totally comprehensive system of diagnosis, based on reflexes which establish exactly which segment of the spine is out of balance;
  2. New smart ways of 'switching off' pain by simple finger-tip manipulation of muscles.It's been called the manual nerve block;
  3. New methods of pin-pointing exactly  which muscle in causing the problem.  Causative muscle spasms are precisely detected, allowing distinctions between primary and referred muscle pain.

And yes, you can use some instrumentation… Some excellent devices which spare your hands and make the job easier. You buy it yourself, in the USA. Also a very economical portable drop-leaf table makes repositioning easy. Or you can keep it all totally manual.

This work can be incorporated into the practices of acupuncturists, reflexologists, masseurs, body workers etc., without any insurance difficulties because the techniques involved all fall within the recognised procedures normal for these practitioners.

Until recent times , we have only accepted medical doctors as students, but now  we are opening these safe and effective techniques to all health professionals. Certainly, there's good evidence that a lot of the old style cracking and popping of bones, and heavy manipulation, is totally unnecessary and sometimes unfortunate.

Ronnie Turner has been a chiropractor and acupuncturist since 1975.He practices in Dublin, Ireland, with his wife Dr Olga Turner MD, a consultant paediatrician with a special expertise in spinal problems.Their Clinic specialises in back pain, homoeopathy and allergy testing.

In the Basic Course of K-Practic you get 4  DVDs , fairly hard packed. They run to over three hours.

Hypnotherapy Training Institute of Britain

It’s more than 30 years since John Butler PhD(Lond) MBSH CHT MA BA(Hons) BSc(Hons) DHP Dip AT had his first client session as a hypnotherapist.  He smiles when he think of the small amount of knowledge he had then: a few basic methods of trance induction, all requiring considerable time and sustained attention from the client, and sets of suggestions called ‘scripts’ intended to address the symptoms the client had presented.

Hypnotherapy Training Institute

John Butler PhD(Lond) MBSH CHT MA BA(Hons) BSc(Hons) DHP Dip AT having an operation under
self-hypnosis which can be accessed on YouTube:

www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s5OFD8uTpU&feature=plcp&list=PL5EAC3CAF08C9E40A

While these methods are still core hypnotherapy practices, Dr Butler rapidly found that his clients stretched his therapeutic resources and forced him into creative redesign and invention.   As he discovered, hypnotherapy has an appeal across a wide range of people, encompassing many different levels of education and economic status, generations, and ethnicities.  So he started a long process which took him through studies in psychology, neurology and different therapeutic practices.

With a continued and varied stream of clients seeking help for smoking cessation, weight loss, phobias, anxieties and almost every situation which is affected by the human imagination and emotions, John consistently found that the most effective methods were those of classic hypnotherapy.  Based on over 200 years of research and clinical practice, they are powerful and rapid in effect because they work directly with the client’s imagination and emotions.  They also have the advantage of being extremely flexible, allowing the hypnotherapist to adapt to clients in a partnership role and supply more or less support, guidance and encouragement as required.  The well-trained practitioner can use very rapid methods of trance induction when needed and employ trance to engage the client’s attention in inner dialogues, addressing confusions and conflicts which are limiting their lives and often causing acute suffering.

Classic hypnotherapy respects the primacy of the client’s own resources and the human need for making meaning of their lives at a profound level.  Clients can learn to discover their freedom to make choices and to acquire and exercise creative mental skills to shape their lives in accordance with the choices they make.

At the Hypnotherapy Training Institute of Britain, the training programme in hypnotherapy has been designed based on decades of extensive clinical experience, study and research, to train hypnotherapists to be the adaptable, skilful practitioners that clients need and deserve. Over 200 hours of classroom training combined with study of course materials and mentorship are provided in the programme, with live demonstrations and practical experiential exercises forming a core part of the curriculum.

D’Mix - Chew your way to Improved Digestive Health

Around 40% of the UK population suffers from digestive problems, with more than £126 million spent on indigestion remedies annually in the UK alone. Causes for indigestion include eating too fast, stress and anxiety as well as eating the wrong foods; all of which are exacerbated by the busy lifestyles we lead and most importantly, by the fact that we don’t chew our food properly.

D'Mix

Digestion starts in the mouth, as chewing breaks down foods into suitable portions for swallowing.  So for many of us, chewing is a simple first step towards better digestive health.

D’Mix from Conscious Food is the first Ayurvedic organic product specifically formulated to encourage chewing and naturally target digestive problems.

Developed by expert herbal and Ayurvedic doctors in India, D’Mix is a unique blend of eight herbs and spices, derived from the highest arable farms in the world to deliver superior concentrations of vitamins and minerals in their purest form for enhanced results. The blend includes peppermint, fennel seed, raw jaggery, hari patti, flax and sesame seed, liquorice, coriander and ajwan - all specifically chosen for their unique properties which have shown to alleviate digestive problems.

D’Mix contains:

  • Peppermint: an analgesic and antispasmodic, eases discomfort and relieves gas and heartburn;
  • Hari Patti: stimulates bile production;
  • Fennel seed: aids digestion and sweetens the breath;
  • Liquorice: relieves abdominal colic, bloating, flatulence and freshens breath, has anti-inflammatory properties;
  • Flaxseed: provides fibre and omega, high in soluble and insoluble fibre;
  • Sesame Seed: provides essential omegas and minerals, high in soluble and insoluble fibre;
  • Ajwan: acts as an anti spasmodic and traditionally used to treat intestinal cramps, flatulence and ‘nervous’ stomach disorders;
  • Coriander seed: acts an anti-acid and natural mouth freshener;
  • Raw Jaggery: naturally high in protein, contains vitamins and minerals and aids absorption.

Taken after every meal, D’Mix enhances the digestive process by encouraging you to chew more often, more slowly and more thoughtfully, soothing your stomach and bringing your digestive system into a naturally balanced state. Results can be seen within five to 21 days and include alleviation from a wide range of every day digestive issues such as food intolerances, constipation, indigestion, bloating and acid reflux as well as helping ease digestive disorders such as IBS, Colitis and Crohn’s disease.

D’Mix retails for £18 and lasts for 30 days and is available at www.consciousfood.co.uk

Medicinal Mushroom Extracts for Diabetics

In the UK it is estimated that around 3 million people including both adults and children are currently living with Diabetes, which amounts to nearly 5% of our UK population. Year on year this figure is growing and over the next 10 to 15 years is expected to reach around 5 million diagnosed cases of the disease.

Medicinal Mushrooms Grinfola

Diabetes is a condition where the body has blood sugar levels higher than normal, for various reasons such as obesity, high cholesterol, lifestyle, smoking and genetics. Not all sufferers need to take insulin to control the condition; many can make lifestyle changes and adapt their eating habits to help with the symptoms. The disease in most cases can be managed effectively but it can be incredibly serious leading to heart disease, kidney failure, strokes and blindness especially if left untreated.

The UK based company Bujtar Medical Ltd is offering highly effective supplements, made using medicinal mushroom extracts. Their products offer an alternative supplement to the chemically formulated medicines traditionally prescribed to treat diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, mental health problems and cancer.

People who have diabetes can purchase one of their diabetic specific products:

  • Caronax, which is a mixture of medical mushroom extracts Agaricus Blazei Murill and Grifola Frondosa. It naturally supports the metabolic process and is best suited to type 2 diabetics;
  • Dianax, which is made up of the mushroom extract, Shaggy Ink Cap, naturally supports the metabolic process and is best suited to type 1 diabetics;
  • Metanax can contribute to the preservation of the body’s healthy blood-sugar level, carbohydrate metabolic balance and the cardiovascular system. This is made up from Camellia Sinensis, Mulberry leaf extract and Grifola Frondosa.

Bujtar Medical’s mushroom extract products hinder the process of the formation of diabetes. They don’t replace a healthy diet and physical exercise but they do help in the prevention and controlling of diabetes. The extracts help maintain insulin levels and with weight loss, in turn helping improve the overall physical and mental well-being of the patient.

Bujtar Medical offers a wide range of medical mushroom extracts not only for the treatment of diabetes but also for other conditions. Bujtar Medical are working to see their wide range of medical mushroom extracts widely available in retailers throughout the UK both in stores and on major online retail websites. They are expecting their products to be available in pharmacies from March 2013. In the meantime products can be purchased from their online store.

    EU Threat to Vitamin and Mineral Supplements

    The consumer organization Consumers for Health Choice has warned the UK and EU regulators that setting low dose levels for dietary supplements will hit consumer choice and cost jobs. New developments in Brussels have put the issue of maximum permitted levels (MPLs) for nutrients firmly back on the political agenda with the expectation that this would stifle consumer choice and remove large numbers of safe, popular and beneficial supplements from the market. Consumers for Health Choice (CHC) has launched a brand new, highly visible and integrated Save Our Supplements (SOS) campaign that will draw attention to the issue and encourage people to sign a petition.
