Tuesday 23 October 2012; 9:30 am-5:00pm

Ticket: £30 (to cover expenses)

Venue: Indian YMCA,, 41 Fitzroy Square, London, W1T 6AQ

The School of Commoning and the CommonsRising Health & Well-being group convene this seminar-gathering. Given the personal, organisational, institutional, financial and environmental challenges of our time, what is next to emerge in the evolution of healthcare?

Nobel_Prize_2009-Press_Conference

How will it be related to the Commons? This gathering is about (re)discovering and  (re)designing the Commons of Health and rethinking the connectedness with the professional healthcare sector. What does this commons look like and how would it affect the functioning of our current existing healthcare model? How can we co-produce a fair, sustainable and equitable healthcare system that serves communities and takes stewardship of our shared resources?

What is the role and importance of Elinor Ostrom’s design-principles in this (re-)design?

Come and explore together the fundamental principles and rules underlying the design of a new sustainable healthcare system.

The Transformational Potential of the Commons in our Lives: 5 seminars in 5 days

James Quilligan,  co-founder and policy development director of the Coalition for the Global Commons (2007-2008) will help us explore many new developments in the dawning world of the commons.

Monday 22 Oct:  How landtrusts provide deeply practical solutions for resource management. Why they are beginning to evolve into bioregional trusts, encompassing large, transboundary ecosystems;

Tuesday 23 Oct: How closing the gap between resource consumers and resource producers allows people to reclaim power over their own healthcare. The new story of health;

Wednesday 24 Oct: How our fiscal, financial and monetary structures have been captured by political and monied interests and how the decision-making for these economic systems can be restored to the common citizen;

Thursday 25 Oct: How generative conversations can reduce the disconnection and powerlessness in society and create new forms of political accountability and trust;

On Friday 26 Oct: Convened by MP Michael Meacher and Lord Andrew Phillips, we will assess today’s dysfunctional political economy and demonstrate how new leverage points for change can mobilize a commons-based society.

NLP Conference 2012: Neuro-Linguistic Programming in London

9 - 11 November 2012

Neuro-Linguistic Programming in London

The NLP conference is an annual event held in London every November which brings together some of the foremost NLP Trainers in the world to share recent innovations and developments in the field. It is an outstanding opportunity to meet and network with like minded people who are using NLP to make a difference to people's lives in areas as diverse as education, health, business and coaching.

This year the conference welcomes Michael Grinder and Art Giser who are running full day workshops on Friday 9th November, as well as an education stream with a choice of 2 parallel sessions on Friday and a half day with Michael Grinder on Saturday. Master of non-verbal communication, Michael Grinder, will give delegates the tools they need to connect more effectively, be they friends, clients, staff, suppliers, customers or bosses. This workshop will teach delegates how to become more credible, confident and persuasive in their life, business, career and relationships.

Art Giser is the originator of Energetic NLP, a unique blend of NLP, transformative energy work and spiritual development. Everyone was born with the abilities to read and transform energy blocks and programming in themselves and others. But we have been programmed by society to turn off these abilities. In this workshop participants will connect with their “Miraculous Self” and start immediately using their hidden gifts to work with energy. They will learn concepts and processes that they can use immediately to enhance and expand their work with clients and to enhance their own health, success, personal development and joy.

Other international NLP Trainers taking part include Frank Pucelik, Ian McDermott, Michael Hall, Wyatt Woodsmall, James Geary, John McWhirter, Laureli Blythe, Judith Lowe, Julian Russell, James Lawley and Penny Tomkins.

One very exciting session is a 5 rhythms workshop on Sunday afternoon with Julian Russell and Sarah Davies. Wooing people is a key competency for anyone engaging with people, leading people, running a business, selling, networking or seeking a dynamic social life. During this workshop participants will dance to five rhythms to experiment with how we build deep rapport and connection, and will learn an approach that gets us ‘in sync’ first with ourselves, and then with others.

FlexxiCore Passive Exerciser

5 -10 minutes on this Revolutionary Passive Exerciser can transform your back care, energy levels, sleep quality & more

Flexxicore

The FlexxiCore Passive Exerciser is the culmination of decades of therapeutic knowledge and experience, from Japan - where ‘Goldfish exercise’ has a long history and in Canada where ‘Continuous Passive Motion’ [CPM] equipment was invented in the 1970s by a specialist in treating backs. CPM equipment is used by osteopaths and other back care professionals to ease spinal problems by encouraging the flow of synovial fluid between the discs. This helps to reduce inflammation and ease pain by supplying nutrients and oxygen to the tissues, and helping to expel the toxins that arise from inflammation.

The oscillatory motion utilized by CPM mirrors some of the techniques used in therapies such as Shiatsu [Japan], Trager [USA] and the harmonic hands-on work of Osteopaths themselves. These manual techniques aim at releasing tension and inducing relaxation. Research has shown that the high incidence of back pain can be largely attributed to a chronic inability to relax, physically and/or mentally. Meanwhile a rocking motion is known to help synchronize brain waves and calm the nervous system.

The FlexxiCore Passive Exerciser combines the invigorating and toning effects of the energizing exercisers invented by the Japanese with the therapeutic back care benefits of specialist CPM equipment - at a fraction of the cost. You just lie down, put your feet up, and let the FlexxiCore’s robust motor do all the work. An elegant and rhythmic wave of oscillating ‘goldfish’ movement travels through your body, releasing tension and stress, while stimulating your body’s energy and circulatory systems.

The muscles relax, and tension that has been held through bad posture, misalignment or stress is released. The nervous system is gently but powerfully stimulated. This results in a boost to circulation of the blood and lymph systems, deeper respiration and lots more fundamental benefits that can often surprise - as the system moves on to a higher level, many longstanding symptoms of imbalance and other health challenges can be relieved.

The FlexxiCore’s ability to simultaneously stimulate the system and release tension at comfortable speed levels means that it is not only fit and healthy people who can enjoy it. People suffering from a broad range of ailments very often see very substantial benefits - generally falling into one or more of these 4 categories:

  1. Poor energy - stimulating the nervous system, deeper breathing, boosting blood and lymph circulation;
  2. Musculo-skeletal - gentle mobilisation of the hips and back, release of tension, muscle toning, realignment;
  3. Digestive system - gentle & deeply acting massage of the internal organs;
  4. Stress – many report a transformation in their mental / emotional state, including better sleep.

Dental Treatments and Systemic Disease

Traditional dentistry has concerned itself with relief of pain, aesthetics and repairing and replacing teeth using micro-engineering techniques. There is beginning to be a realization that infections in the mouth can cause systemic problems such as heart disease; however the concern is only about gum infections around the necks of teeth. However, the problem is far deeper than this when it comes to dental infections.

Dental infections are commonly associated with root filled teeth, cavitations in bone from old extraction sites, especially of wisdom teeth, and trauma. When a tooth inside a tooth dies, bacteria flood into the nerve chamber. Traditional treatment is to open the tooth and remove all tissue from the chamber and fill the chamber with a noxious substance to kill the bacteria and ‘save’ the tooth. However, the goal of killing all the bacteria is never reached due to the anatomy of the tooth.

This picture shows increased heat on the left side associated with

This picture shows increased heat on the left side associated with a root filled tooth.
These tests can pick up potential problems years before the onset of overt disease.

The root tip cannot be filled and remains loaded with bacteria. Even worse, the sides of the tooth are full of tiny passages, about3 km in all, in which the bacteria can stay hidden from the immune system. The bacteria which are similar to the bacteria found in gangrene, release toxins into the body and the effect of this constant toxin release, with other factors such as the genetic predisposition of the patient, eventually wears down the immune system;  cancer can result. It is possible to detect chronic infections using ultra sound scanners such as the Cavitat, the Komstar test which can measure the level of toxin released, and Thermography or heat pictures.

The only way of dealing with infections is to remove the source; antibiotics cannot reach the bacteria, and neither can the patient’s own immune system. In my view, implants are just as bad as often they are placed into infected bone encouraging corrosion and spread of the infection. Not all root filled become toxic but the majority do. Chronic infections less than two inches from the brain are really not to be recommended!

Seaweed in Colon Health and Nutrition

Seaweeds, or ‘kelps’ as the wild brown algae are sometimes called, are known to assist the acid-alkaline balance, have a prebiotic effect on the gut flora , help protect the gut lining, stimulate the secretion of digestive enzymes, assist nutrient absorption and metabolism, and thus strengthen immunity. A certified organic wild seaweed harvested and produced specifically to human food standards could be described as a nutrient-rich, high fibre, low energy whole food, an ideal modern dietary ingredient.

Seaweed in Colon Health and Nutrition

The brown algae are some 25 times more alkaline-forming than common kelp (laminaria species), 77 times more than apples, and 1000 times more than milk, all alkaline-forming foods. Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride, author of Gut & Psychology Syndrome recommends them and the macrobiotic approach, rooted in oriental culinary traditions, includes “a small volume of sea vegetables, about 2%, taken daily, eaten as a condiment, in soup, cooked with grains, beans and vegetables as a seasoning to supply minerals, (and) as a small side dish about twice a week”.

Their proven ability to bind and remove toxic metals and help regulate fatty acid metabolism and electrolyte balance may increase their validity in colonic dysbiosis and that these wrack seaweed species provide in themselves a virtually complete balance of all the nutrients helps explain the numerous references in the literature to their broad efficacy.

Very different from the land, the oceans are a consistently rich growing medium where abundant seaweeds feed a multitude of species. Brown seaweeds are complete, primordial food which, having no roots, absorb and convert nutrients directly from this great 'soup' which covers 70% of the planet and is the final repository of all the Earth's minerals which Nature has very limited means of returning to the soil. The seaweed, which at 75mg per gram is also rich in protein, is able to transform the ocean nutrients into a unique whole food with not only all the trace elements like selenium and zinc, but the entire B group and other rare vitamins including absorbable B12 , D, H and K. It is highly antioxidant, and like green tea, there are valuable tannins and polyphenols. Against the most nutrient dense species of land fruits and vegetables, half a teaspoon of Seagreens dried wrack seaweed has, for example, the same amount of vitamin B2 as 100g of blackberries or broccoli!.

A range of indigestible polysaccharides constituting about 25% of the seaweed are an effective prebiotic and have been shown to prevent adhesion to the gut wall by helicobacter pylori bacteria . They also bind for elimination through the bowel, pollutants and toxic metals like lead and mercury - of special importance in the treatment of obesity since fat stores toxins which are released into the system in the process of weight regulation.

Help Your Heart With NoBlush Niacin

New supplement from Patrick Holford helps naturally lower cholesterol levels

NoBlush Niacin 60s

The World Health Organisation has recently estimated that almost 20% of all strokes and over 50% of all heart attacks can be attributed to high cholesterol. With incidences of cardiovascular disease and high cholesterol on the rise in the UK, hearts up and down the country are increasingly in need of a bit of TLC.

NoBlush Niacin, formulated by leading nutritionist, Patrick Holford, has been especially designed to help naturally balance cholesterol levels and boost overall heart health.

It is a common misconception that cardiovascular disease only affects those with fatty diets. However, not all cholesterol is harmful for the body and people with low levels of beneficial cholesterol or ‘HDL cholesterol’ can actually be at risk of developing heart problems as well.

Niacin or Vitamin B3 is one of the best vitamins to take to help lower levels of harmful cholesterol and helps the body by supporting liver function. Patrick Holford’s NoBlush Niacin works by helping reduce levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol in the body, whilst encouraging the production of beneficial HDL cholesterol.

Furthermore, as the name suggests, NoBlush Niacin won’t leave you red faced . This is because the supplement contains a unique form of niacin that does not cause the normal flushing effect usually associated with other forms of the vitamin.

Further Information

NoBlush Niacin is available from Holland & Barratt stores nationwide. RRP: £18.99 for 60 tablets.

Lightning Process: The First Steps to Getting Well

by Phil Parker

Published by Hay House Publishing. 2012. Paperback. £10.99. ISBN 10: 178180057X

The results of a study into The Lightning Process and the experiences of young people with CFS/ME who have undergone the process, has just been published in the British Journal of Health Psychology. The results showed that most had positive experiences and were much improved.

Lightning Process: The First Steps to Getting Well

Chronic fatigue syndrome/myalgic encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) is a serious condition characterized by debilitating but unexplained fatigue. Treatment alternatives are few, and especially so for young people. The aetiology of CFS/ME is still unclear and controversial, but rehabilitative interventions seem so far most promising. The Lightning Process is a 3-day training programme that has recently become available - it is a non-medical training programme that combines concepts from Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Life Coaching and Osteopathy.

The Lightning Process is a self-help technique that produces extraordinary results and has helped thousands of people to transform and enhance their lives, health and success. Individuals have used it to astonish themselves, their families and health care teams by recovering from complex conditions, including: CFS / ME, MS, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, addictions, and low self-esteem.

At the core of the Lightening Process is the idea that our health is something we can be involved in improving; that instead of being a passive patient waiting for a doctor to ‘fix’ us, we can use our inbuilt healing mechanisms to help our recovery process.  This book has been designed both as an essential first step for all those intending to take a Lightning Process seminar and also as a resource for discovering more about how this unique training programme can make a difference in anyone's life.

Phil Parker is an internationally renowned lecturer, therapist and innovator in the field of personal development. His training as a hypnotherapist, executive coach, certified master practitioner of NLP and osteopath give this book a unique perspective and provide new solutions to meet the challenges and opportunities of life in the 21st century. www.lightningprocess.com

    Petition Against Echinacea Ban

    A petition has been launched calling for a reversal of the decision by the Medicines Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency  (MHRA) and the Irish Medicines Board (IMB) on 20 August 2012, which effectively bans Echinacea products in children under 12. Echinacea is a herb with a long history; no safety issues of major concern have been reported in hundreds of years of use. The information used by both the MHRA and the IMB to make their determination was studied and no evidence or justification was found to support this decision.

    Safe Sun Advice for Scottish Mum’s-To-Be

    Too many women in Scotland are failing to follow current advice on vitamin D supplement use in pregnancy. This is leading to very low levels in some mothers and newborns, particularly in the winter months; the problem is greatest in mothers from poorer areas. This is the conclusion of a study led by Professor Paul Haggarty at the University of Aberdeen’s Rowett Institute of Nutrition and Health. The researchers recommend that more should be done to improve the uptake of current advice on vitamin D supplements, but they also suggest that promoting safe sun exposure and access to green spaces in summer could be a useful additional strategy, even in the north of Scotland.

    We Need an Anti Inflammatory Diet

    Gene Smart Wellness has released a guide to eating an anti-inflammatory diet. Our genes are the same, yet the foods we eat have changed dramatically over the past 50 years. By processing our foods to make them more convenient and cheaper to produce, industrialized food companies have inadvertently changed our food supply, adding fats that are high in omega-6 and taking away fibre and key nutrients known as polyphenols and omega-3. These changes cause mismatches between our genes and diets, resulting in higher levels of whole body inflammation.

    High-Fat Diet Resets Metabolism and Prevents Obesity

    Surprisingly, even though both groups consumed the same amount of calories, mice that ate a high-fat diet on a fixed schedule had a lower body weight than mice eating a low-fat diet without a fixed schedule. Research from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem shows that carefully scheduled high-fat diet can lead to a reduction in body weight and a unique metabolism in which ingested fats are not stored, but rather used for energy at times when no food is available.
