Crystal Ball Bath Dechlorinator – Helps Prevent Eczema Flare-ups

Eczema can be a debilitating condition, hard to manage and quick to flare up, causing misery for both adults and children. Up to 40% of people will have an episode of eczema at some point in their lives – some grow out of it, for others it is a lifelong challenge.

There have been advances in the way eczema is treated, as well as identifying and preventing its triggers, including food, and irritants such as dust mites and furry animals. An under-recognized triggers is chlorine, which is added to UK water as a bacteria-control method and  can be an irritant in the bath and shower.

Use of a simple product such as the Crystal Ball Bath Dechlorinator or a shower filter can make a big difference. Both items can help prevent flare-ups of eczema by removing vast amounts of chlorine from domestic bathing water.

Don and Maxima Skelton faced first-hand the challenges that allergies can bring. Both their daughter and son suffered from severe food, environmental and chemical sensitivities, as did Maxima. Their personal experiences have ensured that they have a genuine understanding of all the issues at hand which lead to the launch, 20 years ago of The Healthy House Ltd.

Crystal Ball Bath Dechlorinator and Shower Filter are available from Healthy House Ltd, who supply and support  a full range of products related to eczema and many other allergies and sensitivities. Please contact the Healthy House on Tel: 0845 450 5950 or 01453 752216;

Vital Woman for Menopause

Vital Women

The hot flushes, mood swings and inability to concentrate during the menopause followed by cognitive decline thereafter are considered inevitable by most. However there are factors to help us control declining oestrogen levels;  these keys have been combined in vitalWOMAN to help create a more positive, brighter outcome…

Receptors for the female hormone oestrogen are not confined to the reproductive organs, but have been found to be widespread in the brain and nervous system. So when levels of the hormone become erratic at the menopause, so do we! And because oestrogen also affects other hormones and neurotransmitters affecting our mood, motivation, sex drive and cognitive ability, its decline thereafter seems to herald the end of life as we knew it.

In countries where consumption of soy is high, women suffer very little with menopausal problems and the isoflavones found in soy may be the first key to helping us here in the West.

Soy isoflavones have been proven to raise oestrogen levels when they are low and reduce them when they are high. By acting as mild oestrogens themselves, they exert this effect and in so doing offer relief from hot flushes and night sweats as well as helping to prevent the neurodegeneration and cognitive decline that accompanies falling oestrogen levels. Studies have shown that soy isoflavones significantly improve cognitive performance in postmenopausal women.[1]

Further evidence of their efficacy was published earlier this year in a study that showed women supplementing with soy isoflavones had significantly fewer hot flushes, in number and severity, than those who didn’t.[2] Menopause rating-scale scores (a way of reflecting general menopausal symptoms) also significantly decreased compared to baseline with isoflavone supplementation. Furthermore, mood was seen to dramatically improve over the study period.

The second key is Klamath blue-green algae, one of the most nutrient-dense food on earth providing a myriad of nutrients (amino acids, vitamins, minerals, super-antioxidants, enzymes, chlorophyll) and precursors for hormones and neurotransmitters. It is exceptionally rich in phenylethylamine (PEA), the amino acid we produce naturally in the brain when we feel happy, calm and focussed. PEA is a neuroregenerative molecule proven to improve attention, mental acuity, mood and levels of dopamine also known as the ‘feel good’ hormone, vital for concentration, short term memory, motivation and to generate feelings of sexual desire. A recent study showed that menopausal women who received PEA rich extracts from Klamath had significantly improved psychological profiles over those taking placebo, thus reporting a consistent change in their quality of life, for mood, anxiety and depressive attitude.[3]

The third and fourth keys are Angelica sinensis (also known as ‘female ginseng’) considered in Chinese medicine to be a key plant for regulating the female hormonal system and Cimicifuga racemosa shown in studies to be effective at relieving menopausal complaints.[4]

1.Two studies by the research group of Prof. Louise Dye, Human Appetite Research Unit, the Institute of Psychological Sciences at the University of Leeds, demonstrate a statistically significant effect of the consumption of soy isoflavones on specific aspects of memory in postmenopausal women. In 21 postmenopausal women, 100mg/d soy isoflavones taken for 8 weeks improved specific indices of verbal learning and memory after 4 weeks, and frontal lobe functioning after 8 weeks. Soy isoflavones were found to exert stronger cognitive effects in postmenopausal women compared to premenopausal women.  The physiological response to soy isoflavones may differ between postmenopausal and premenopausal women.  Circulating oestrogen was not significantly affected by soy isoflavones in the premenopausal women, but there was a significant increase in peripheral oestrogen in the postmenopausal women. It is well established that endogenous oestrogen levels play an important role in cognition. Oestrogen levels are also linked with neurodegeneration with age and cognitive decline in postmenopausal women.

Mobile Phones Exceed FCC Exposure Limits by As Much as Double for Children

A scholarly article of mobile phones published online in the journal Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine reports finding that mobile phones used in the shirt or trouser pocket exceed FCC exposure guidelines and that children absorb twice as much microwave radiation from phones as adults. The paper entitled Exposure Limits: The Underestimation of Absorbed Cell Phone Radiation, Especially in Children, notes that the industry-designed process for evaluating microwave radiation from phones  results in children absorbing twice the cellphone radiation to their heads, up  to triple in their brain's hippocampus and hypothalamus, greater absorption in their eyes and as much as ten times more in their bone marrow.

    Obese Children and Asthma

Asthma is considered one of the main causes of school absenteeism and its prevalence has risen in the last few decades. Overweight children have been shown to have double the frequency of asthma than that of non-obese children. Poor diet and insufficient exercise are associated with a series of cardiovascular risks and other chronic diseases, but some studies point out that asthma could be added to that risk since the association between asthma and obesity comes from some common factors, as was discussed during the 2nd EAACI Paediatric Allergy and Asthma Meeting (PAAM 2011) in Barcelona from 13-15 October.

Patrick McKeown has released a free ebook to download called Buteyko meets Dr Mew which is based on the life's work of Dr Buteyko and Orthodontist Dr John Mew. The journal General Dentist noted that children whose mouth breathing is untreated develop long, narrow faces, narrow mouths, high palatal vaults, crooked teeth and gummy smiles. These children do not sleep well at night due to obstructed airways; this lack of sleep can adversely affect their growth and academic performance. Many of these children are misdiagnosed as having attention deficit disorder (ADD) and hyperactivity.

    Role of Oxidants in Pre-Eclampsia

A breakthrough article published in Systems Biology in Reproductive Medicine, published by Informa, shows findings of a new study on pre-eclampsia which should prove to be a valuable resource for the identification of new therapeutic tools for this devastating condition. Pre-eclampsia is one of the most common and potentially serious pregnancy associated disorders and it continues to be the leading cause of maternal and foetal morbidity. There is now an emerging consensus that pre-eclampsia is a complex multi-factorial disease in which genetic factors, both maternal and foetal, and environmental factors are involved. This research and the article by Dr Nishizawa et al helps us take a big step towards finding meaningful therapeutic tools for treating pre-eclampsia.

    Going Green for Weight Loss

This year's diet trend is using a pH balancing strategy to keep svelte waistlines in check. Proponents of the alkaline diet advocate a careful balance of acid and alkaline-forming foods for optimum health, namely a diet of 75-80% alkaline and 20-25% acidic food. Acid-forming foods such as meat, dairy, processed grain like bread and pasta and sugars are a no-no, which nutrient-rich fruit, vegetables, pulses and green super-smoothies are the order of the day. Barley and Wheat Glass Powder from Lifestream can help keep your pH levels in check and keep hunger pangs at bay. 1tsp mixed with 1 litre of water sipped though the day is rich in nutrients, minerals, fibre, chlorophyll and other phytonutrients which are useful in assisting the body's digestive system and helping maintain nutritional sufficiency.
