Abstract

OTT, Pain and Palliative Care Program and Pediatric Oncology, Dana Farber Cancer Institute, Boston, MA02115, USA, maryjane_ott@dfci.harvard.edu, has reviewed (21 references) mindfulness meditation. Abstract: Teaching mindfulness meditation is a nursing intervention that can promote healing. Consistent and regular practice of mindfulness meditation has been shown in a variety of research settings to reduce the experience of pain and stress. Practitioners develop an inner calm that allows them to experience daily life with more equanimity. By its emphasis on being rather than doing it provides a way through suffering for patients and their relatives and staff. The practice transforms individuals into compassionate witnesses of their own experience who can be open to new possibilities, transformation, and healing.
