Application of Neuromuscular Taping Techniques
in Lymphatic Drainage

The basis for the Medical Taping Concept was laid in Japan and Korea in the seventies. At the time, methods of taping were being developed starting from the idea that movement and muscle activity are essential in maintaining and recovering health. The idea behind this was that muscles are not only responsible for movements of the body but they also control, for instance, blood and lymph circulation as well as body temperature. If the muscles do not function properly, it can cause a range of symptoms and complaints.

The Medical Taping Concept CureTape application has the following objectives:

  • Improving the muscle function by regulating muscle tone
  • Removing any congestion to blood and lymphatic circulation
  • Alleviating pain
  • Supporting the function of the joints by:
    • Stimulating proprioception
    • Correcting the direction of movement
    • Increasing stability
  • Neuro-reflexive manipulation

The Medical Taping Concept is based on principles that are simple to learn, and the CureTape can be applied to any region of the body, as long as the physiotherapist understands the concept and is capable in the techniques.

Versatility is one of CureTape’s fundamental characteristics, and there are constantly new applications and combinations being discovered.

The Medical Taping Concept Lymphatic Drainage Course will cover lymphatic drainage in the following areas:

  • Head and neck – post neck dissections
  • Breast
  • Pubic swelling
  • Swelling at the top of the thigh and root of the limb
  • Elbow region
  • Scar and fibrosis taping

All participants will receive a copy of the TNM Manual by Josya Sijmonsma

Applications of Neuromuscular Taping in Neurology

The use of Medical Taping Concept (MTC) / (Neuromuscular Taping-NMT) applications in neurological disorders is an emerging innovation in Southern Europe.

In countries, such as Italy Spain and Portugal, the use of MTC / NMT starts at an early stage in the treatment of neurological disorder, as it is fully compatible with any other manual techniques. The concept stresses keeping the patients “mobilized” as opposed to “immobilization” per conventional techniques.

In addition, the technique stresses the importance of “decompression” when applying the technique in neurological disorders as opposed to “compression” when applied in sports injury.

Introduction

The applications of Neuromuscular Taping in neurological disorders follow different criteria, both in content and objectives related to conventional orthopaedic treatment. Like any other technique, the practice should be used in combination with other techniques to obtain a desired clinical outcome.

Course Objective

The objective is to provide a practical tool for physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nurses responsible for supporting the treatment of various neurological disorders. Therefore the course offers:

1.Instruction as to the proper taping technique for central or peripheral neurological damage.

2.Instruction on specific treatment of spasticity; by correcting the alignment of the muscle segments in order to improve joint movement.

3.Instruction on use in patients with neurological disorders such as Multiple Sclerosis, Amyo-trophic Lateral Sclerosis, Parkinson's and post stroke paralysis. (Assuming authorization by medical consultant.)

Duration: The course duration is 18 hours over two days.

Requirements: Participants should have completed a 15 hour Basic course (or 12 hour Lymphatic Drainage course) on the use of neuromuscular taping. Those who have participated in KT 1 and KT 2 courses fulfil this requirement.

Participants: The course is open to qualified medical professionals working with patients who are undergoing long term care for neurological conditions. A detailed knowledge of both the anatomy and manual rehabilitation techniques are important.

Accreditation: Certificate of Participation by the APBNM (Portuguese Association of Neuromuscular Taping).
