Training to teach the Alexander Technique

If you have had lessons in the Technique, you might be considering training as a teacher. The best way to find out about the training programme is to visit a training school.

Oxford Alexander Training School

You are welcome to visit this school any time– contact Stephen Cooper, the director of the school, to arrange a visit.

The school has been in existence since 1993. The three year course is recognised and accredited by the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique, and graduates of the course qualify for membership of the Society.

Students attend classes every weekday morning during term, from 9.15 – 12.30. The course lasts three years (9 consecutive terms). You can join in any term - Autumn, Spring or Summer.

The daily programme consists of

  • an open class session from 9.15 – 10.30,
  • followed by a tea break,
  • followed by a talk or a discussion:
  • then the last hour of the morning is another open class session.

Summer Classes

One way to find out a bit more about the training is to come along to our summer classes. These morning sessions give a good flavour of what it is like to study the Technique in depth. Each daily class is limited to six participants. The classes are attended by teachers and students as well as people who have been taking lessons and those considering training.

Getting started with the Alexander Technique

If you are new to the Technique, the best way to get started is to have one to one lessons with a qualified teacher. There are teachers throughout the United Kingdom – an extensive list of teachers can be found at www.stat.org.uk, the website of STAT (the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique). Most training school heads also give private lessons, and Stephen Cooper, the director of the Oxford Alexander Training School, gives private lessons in Oxford. He also has a long-standing association with the Bloomsbury Alexander Centre in central London, which he founded in 1988. The teachers at the centre are all experienced and are all members of STAT.

Introductory Classes

As an alternative to one to one lessons, you can get started by attending a workshop or a course of evening classes. The Bloomsbury Alexander Centre runs regular workshops, and also four-week evening courses, available on Tuesdays and on Wednesdays. In Oxford, Stephen runs an on-going class on Tuesday evenings. You can come along once to find out what the Technique is all about, and you can come back afterwards as often as you like.
