This article presents an interview with a young woman whose breast
cancer has been in remission for twelve years. The context is research the author has been doing with individuals who have survived
cancer, in order to discover the common factors.
The interviewee had detected a lump early and had a lumpectomy, followed by a recommendation to have further surgery, which she declined. She credits her subsequent good health to early diagnosis, acceptance that she had
cancer, being proactive, and having strong belief in and commitment to the course of action she chose. She uses homeopathic treatment, Qi Kung, diet, positive thinking, prayer and meditation. She also credits being open to help and support from others.
The author also refers to a case in which only conventional treatments were used, and failed. However, he states clearly that he is not suggesting that patients avoid conventional treatment. His recommendation is that people who have
cancer do their own research into all the treatments available, decide on the course of action that seems most right for them, and proceed with determination and without regrets.
The author has been a Professor of Botany in Malaysia, holds a DSc in Alternative Medicine and an honorary degree in Natural Medicine. The article references articles from The Oncologist, and The Breast Cancer Wars Oxford University Press New York, 2001.
